He was born in Fairfield, August 12, 1808. His father, Stephen Tobey, was a well known farmer, and a leader in the Methodist church of which he was a devout and faithful member. His mother, Sarah N. Ellis, of Sandwich, Mass., was also an earnest Christian, and a woman of exceptional force of character. The early influences received at his home left a marked and abiding impress on his life and character. He was graduated from the Bowdoin Medical School in 1832, and entered upon the practice of his profession at Athens in the same year. He was twice married. His first wife was Sarah P. Williams, of Athens. A son and daughter by this marriage are still living, H. G. Tobey, and Mrs. Albert Leavitt, both of Athens. Another son, James, lost his life in the late war. His second wife, Mrs. Maria G. Hall survives him. He was a member of the Legislature in1840 and 1848. For fifteen years he was chairman of the board of selectmen. He united with the Congregational church in 1867, and died in its fellowship. He continued in the active practice of his profession for over forty years, and his skill gave him a wide reputation. During all these years he was the beloved physician in many homes and he knew how to pity when he could not heal. He rode a circuit of nearly fifty miles, and only his fine physique enabled him to endure the strain. During his entire residence in Athens he was a conspicuous figure in the life of the town. He was generous, public-spirited, a leader in all good movements, and one who kept himself unspotted from the world. He was a shining example of a manly man. He came to a green old age, sustained by a simple and unquestioning faith in Christ. His sunny, genial presence endeared him greatly to all in the family circle. He lived a useful life, had an honorable career, and died sincerely lamented. The number of physicians connected to the family is somewhat remarkable. Two sisters, Mrs. Susan E. Thayer, and Mrs. Julia A. Campbell, both of Waterville, married physicians, and the first named is the mother of Dr. F. C. Thayer, also of Waterville. Another sister, Mrs. Rebecca Brown, of Norridgewock, is the mother of Dr. L. Brown, and her daughter Sarah, who died some years since, married the late Dr. W.B. Leavitt, of Athens. This fact of seven physicians in a single family circle is worthy of public record. Besides the three sisters named above, a fourth, Mrs. Eliza Steadman of Waterville, and two brothers, Charles E. Tobey of Waterville, and Stephen L. Tobey of Athens, survive him. The funeral, as stated in the Reporter, took place on Sunday Oct. 25, and was conducted by Rev. C. V. Hanson, of Skowhegan, who was a college classmate of Dr. F. C. Thayer, a nephew of the deceased. Thus has passed away one of the most honored residents of Somerset county, and one whose name will long remain as an inspiration to a noble and useful life.
