Description	:	Jane Hoogestraat of Springfield MO passed away September 8, 2015. Jane was born on February 4, 1959, in Mitchell, South Dakota to Wayne and Diana (Schmidt) Hoogestraat. She graduated from Brookings (SD) High School and earned a BA in English (Honors Program) from Baylor University, and a MA and PhD (with honors) in English from the University of Chicago. During her... Read More	Jane Hoogestraat of Springfield MO passed away September 8, 2015. Jane was born on February 4, 1959, in Mitchell, South Dakota to Wayne and Diana (Schmidt) Hoogestraat. She graduated from Brookings (SD) High School and earned a BA in English (Honors Program) from Baylor University, and a MA and PhD (with honors) in English from the University of Chicago. Jane taught English and Speech at Mary College (now the University of Mary) in Bismarck, ND. Since 1989, she has been an English professor at Missouri State University (MSU) in Springfield. During her tenure at MSU, Jane served for six years as the Director of Graduate Studies for the English Department and from 2007 to 2015 as the English Department's Literature Coordinator. Jane was an accomplished poet, scholar and beloved teacher of literature, poetry, creative writing, composition and advanced academic writing. Dr. Hoogestraat's poems have been published in numerous journals, two chapbooks, and in 2014 she received the John Ciardi award for "Border States" (collection of poems), BkMk Press (University of Missouri, Kansas City). She had a wonderful career as a teacher and poet, devoted to her profession, her students and her writing. Jane is survived by her sister and brother- in-law, Eric and Laurie Feiler of Pierre, SD; two nieces, Carly Feiler of Mandan, ND and Jenna Feiler of Sioux Falls, SD; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Diana Hoogestraat. Jane's memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2015, Christ Episcopal Church, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to a scholarship fund to be established in Dr. Hoogestraat's name at Missouri State University.
