Description	:	Word has been received of the death of Dr. John B. Thomas, 80, of Ottsville and formerly of Monticello, Iowa, and Chambersburg, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Doylestown (Pa.) Hospital, of cancer. Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Monticello, he was a son of the late Dr. Colin G. and Eloise Brainerd Thomas. Read More	Word has been received of the death of Dr. John B. Thomas, 80, of Ottsville and formerly of Monticello, Iowa, and Chambersburg, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Doylestown (Pa.) Hospital, of cancer. Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Monticello, he was a son of the late Dr. Colin G. and Eloise Brainerd Thomas. A graduate of the Shattuck School, Fairbault, Minn., He attended Carnegie Tech and the University of Chicago. He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and was an engineer on a B-29 bomber in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following his discharge from the military in 1946, he earned undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago and served an internship and residency with Public Health Service. He continued training at Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan., specializing in child psychiatry. From 1959 to 1980, he practiced in Cheshire, Conn. Dr. Thomas was later medical director of High Meadows Residential Treatment Center and on the staff of Connecticut Valley Hospital. Later, he was medical director of Meriden Child Guidance Clinic. In 1980, he joined Indian Health Service, Gallup, N.M ., and was director of the Department of Psychiatry at Indian Health Service Hospital. In 1994, he retired and moved to Pennsylvania. He did volunteer work at Cumberland Valley Mental Health Center, Chambersburg. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golf, bridge, literature and poetry. An artist, he exhibited art in 1998 in Philadelphia with his son Jeffrey. He and his first wife, Betty Shepard Thomas, were married on Oct. 9, 1943, in Texas, while both were in the military. She died in 1994. A brother also preceded him in death. Surviving are his second wife, Marilyn Forbes Martin Thomas, whom he married Sept. 27, 1997, in Portland, Ore.; three sons, John B. Jr. (husband of Ellen) of West Hartford, Conn., Jeffrey of Philadelphia and Paul (husband of Elsa) of New Haven, Conn.; a daughter, JoAnne (wife of Rev. Richard) Cartwright of Clearfield; six grandchildren; two step children, James Martin of Portland, Ore., and Ann (Mrs. Craig) Hovick of Longmont, Colo.; three step grandchildren; a brother, Colin (husband of Shirley) of Chapel Hill, M.C.; and two sisters, Betty (Mrs. John) Busby of Oyster Bay, N.Y., and Marjorie (Mrs. Bob) Lubben of Monticello.
