Box was born April 1, 1854 at Drakesville, Iowa, and after a lingering illness of more than a year, died at his home in Ottumwa, May 18, 1925. He was married to Eliza A. Hancock, September 11, 1883. The widow and two children, Paul D. of Omaha and Mrs Ray C. Kidd of Washington, D.C. survive him. For approximately 50 years he was engaged in the practice of medicine. His father, Dr. J. J. Box was one of the prominent physicians of this section of the state and Dr. J. C. Box literally grew up in a physician's office, having begun the study of medicine under his father at an early age. He received his education at Oskalosa college, Scudder's Eelectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio the Bennett college, Chicago and at the Rush Medical institute, Chicago. For a number of years he was a member of Dr. Keeley's staff after which he located in Ottumwa in 1896, where he practiced until his death. He became a member of the Christian church when 14 years old and he was prominent in various Masonic and other fraternal organizations. During his last conscious moments he often spoke of his love for the church. He became a member of the Davis Street Christian church soon after moving to Ottumwa. He was an elder in the church for a number of years and also taught the Men's Bible class. His knowledge of the scriptures and his ability to correctly quote them are worthy of mention. His grandfather, John Box, was the first settler in what is now Lee county, Iowa. He was elected to the legislature five times and was the first post master in Iowa, and broke the first ground for the first railroad in the state. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.B. Book, pastor of the Davis Street Christian church, assisted . . . . (missing because of tear) Interment . . . (missing) Floris cemetery. BOX FUNERAL Funeral services for Dr. J.C. Box well-known physician who died Monday afternoon at his home, 138 North Davis street, were held yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Davis Street Christian church, conducted by Rev. A. B. Book, assisted by Rev. L. R. Putnam. The services at the grave in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Floris, were in charge of the Masonic lodge and Rev. D.W. Box Passes Away Dr. J.C. Box, a former Davis county resident, and well known throughout this county, passed away at Ottumwa, Monday afternoon at (?) last week. The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon of last week. The services at the home were conducted by Rev. A.B. Book, assisted by Rev. L.R. Putnam. The body was taken to Floris for burial. The service at the grave was conducted by the Masonic lodge and Rev. D.W. Hastings.
