John married Mary Elizabeth Lea in October 1932 and was the father of Martha Anne Williams, Stephen Hughes Williams and Roger Lea Williams. His sisters were Isabella Riggs Williams, Mary Hamilton Williams, and Laura Clifford Williams Brown. John married Mary Elizabeth Lea in October 1932 and was the father of Martha Anne Williams, Stephen Hughes Williams and Roger Lea Williams. Their marriage of almost 73 years ended with Mary's death in 2004. John and Mary were loving grandparents to ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. John received his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College and his Ph.D. at Iowa State University. He conducted research and and development in industry, then concluded his career as the first preservation officer of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. John and his wife were members of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a member of the Masonic Order and several scientific societies. With his wife, John is interred at New London Cemetery in Shandon, Ohio, where his father's side of the family settled in the early 19th century. A memorial service was held for him on July 2, 2006, at the Shandon Congregational Church, with the Reverend Steven P. Fox officiating. Published in Journal-News on July 7, 2006
