JOHN SEAVER^ {John John John^)* was born at Chelsea, Vermont, October 2, 1802, and when about eight years of age moved back to Boscawen with his parents. He first attended the district school and afterwards fitted for college at Salisbury Academy. An old program of a public exhibition at this academy, August 20, 1819, shows that J. S. Elliot took part in three dialogues during the morning session and in one dialogue during the afternoon {History of Salisbury, pp. 213, 214, 215). J. S. Elliot began the study of medicine with Dr. Austin George of Boscawen, August 11, 1822. He attended his first course of lectures at Dartmouth College and his second at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He was graduated from the Dartmouth Medical School in 1825, receiving therefrom the degree of M. D. In 1826 he began the practice of medicine at Strafford, Vermont, and continued there till 1829 when he moved to Pittsfield, New Hampshire. On August 1, 1839, he received a commission as surgeon of the Eighteenth Regiment of Militia in New Hampshire from Governor John Page. This document is still preserved by his grandchildren at the old home in Manchester. In 1844 Dr. Elliot removed to Manchester, New Hampshire where he lived until his death, twenty-two years later. Dr. Elliot was accounted one of the skillful practitioners of his time. Beside his pro-fessional ability he also possessed remarkable sagacity, shrewdness and foresight in business matters shown by his accumulation of a handsome property. Politically he was a Democrat of the most unswerving type, but the exacting demands of a busy professional life precluded his holding public office. Married (first), June 30, 1833, in Pittsfield, Mrs. Asenath (Bean) Randlett, who was born December 10, 1810, at Gilmanton, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Francis Bean and the widow of Jefferson Randlett of Gilmanton. She died in Manchester, October 8, 1849. Married (second), August 1, 1850, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Batchelder) Harvey, daughter of Levi and Mary Batchelder, and widow of John M. Harvey of Manchester. She died in Manchester, March 20, 1880, aged fifty-six years, nine months, twenty-eight days. In her will Dr. Elliot's widow, after making numeroiis charitable bequests, left the residue of her estate, subject to the death of her mother, Mrs. Batchelder, for the establishment in the city of Manchester of a hospital to be known as the Mary Elliot Hospital. The bequest at the time of Mrs. Elliot's death amounted to about $60,000. This was the first considerable private benefaction given to the city of Manchester; and the institution was one of the first general hospitals to be established in the state. Representatives of six of the leading Protestant churches, together with the mayor and president of the Common Council, ex officiis, were constituted a board of trustees. The hospital was incorporated July 21, 1881, but no steps could be taken to carry out the project tillafter the death of Mrs. Batchelder, which occurred in July, 1884. In March, 1886, the trustees purchased for $7,600 the Robert Hall estate of twenty-seven acres, a sightly elevation about a mile and a half southeast of the City Hall. Meanwhile the fund was accumulating, and when the hospital was formally opened, April 17, 1890, the total assets amounted to $84,655 of which $42,470 had been invested in site, buildings and furnishings. The hospital has proved itself such a valuable institution that other gifts and bequests have been made so that the report of 1915 gives the assets at $150,431. The main building has seventeen private rooms for patients beside two wards containing seven beds each. A maternity wing, accommodating twelve patients, is the gift of Mrs. Frank P. Carpenter and her sister, Mrs. L. Melville French; and the nurses' home and the endowment for the operating room are due to the generosity of Miss Emily Smith.
