Smith passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carrie W. White, at Bushnell, Friday, February 6th. He had been in failing health for some time. Several weeks ago he underwent an operation on his eyes at Omaha. On leaving the hospital he was brought to Albion where he remained for a time under the care of his son, Dr. J. W. B. Smith. A few weeks ago he returned to Bushnell to the home of his daughter and it was here that the end came. Joseph H. Smith was born in Bayham township, Ontario, May 7th, 1842. Born in a log house on the frontier of a heavily wooded section, his early life was spent with his father in clearing the forest. Finally better days came and as his ambition was to study medicine, he entered Aurora Seminary, at Aurora, Illinois, preliminary to taking up his medical training at Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and Detroit Medical College from which he graduated in 1870. He began the practice of medicine in Kendall, New York, that same year. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Mary C. Barnum of Kendall. To them were born five children, two of whom passed away in early life. In 1879 the lure of the west gripped him and he came west and settled in Albion with his little family. The pioneer has troubles enough but his came not singly, for the next year a scourge of typhoid fever broke out and his wife was claimed as one of the victims. Bereft of his companion and the mother of his children, he set out to try and overcome his loss. These early years were trying years. Times were hard and conditions difficult but the young doctor stuck to his post giving the best years of his life in ministering to the sufferings of the men and women and children who were struggling to establish and maintain homes in a new land. Many a pioneer recalls the sacrifices made and the hardships endured by Dr. Smith in his effort to serve his people. He continued his practice in Albion until declining years compelled him to cease his arduous labors. The last few years of his life were spent with his children, Mrs. Carrie W. White, of Bushnell; Mrs. Louise P. Cary, of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Dr. J. W. B. Smith of this city. Besides his three children he leaves two brothers, Josiah R. Smith, 88 years old, and Chauncey E. Smith, 75 years old, both of Tilsonberg, Ontario, Canada. These and many friends mourn his passing. The body was brought to Albion Sunday night and Monday afternoon funeral services were held from the Dr. J. W. B. Smith residence. The service was in charge of the Masons, to which order the deceased belonged. D. J. Poynter, pioneer friend delivered the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
