Description	:	He was the son of William Hubbell and Elizabeth J. Smith Hubbell Matson. His mother is last found as Eliza J. Hubbell, age 64 on the 1880 Census for North Dansville, Livingston County, New York with the household of her son-in-law, Samuel Goodyear. Humanitarian, physician, and teacher. First American Red Cross Field Representative. Supervised the first international relief effort of the American Red Cross in Russia in 1892. Read More	He was the son of William Hubbell and Elizabeth J. Smith Hubbell Matson. His mother is last found as Eliza J. In 1876 Hubbell was an instructor at the Dansville Hygenic Seminary in New York when he met Clara Barton whose summer residence was in Danville. One day Hubbell asked Miss Barton what he could do to help her realize her dream of an Red Cross organization. She replied that he should become a doctor. He returned to school and graduated from the University of Michigan as a Doctor of Medicine. Becoming a doctor was the start of his life of selflessness. Prior to the Red Cross, Hubbell spent a year in St. Louis in the brokerage business with an uncle. Afterwards he returned to the family farm, attended Cornell College in Iowa and taught at the seminary run by his brother-in-law, Samuel H. Goodyear in Dansville. He was Associate U.S. Delegate to the International Conference of the Red Cross in Germany in 1887, and at Vienna in 1897, and the only U.S. delegate at the International Conference of the Red Cross at Rome. Hubbell was associated with Clara Barton until her death in 1912. Dr. Hubbell was active in every major relief work except the Galveston disaster in 1900, when he was ill with fever contracted in Cuba.
