Description	:	Dr. Karl G. Avery was born to Charles Emory, DDS and Lillian Charlotte (Johnson) Avery in 1915. He was raised in Cherokee County, Iowa. He attended college at the University of Iowa and married Jean Knowlton in 1938. They relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah where Karl completed his residency. On Friday, August 22, 1947, six persons from Cody and Powell, Wyoming, including the owner of the Cody Enterpise newspaper, came into the park bringing two boats. A storm was raging in Yellowstone Lake for much of the day, but in the evening it seemed to lift, and they launched the sixteen-foot boats from the docks in front of Lake Hotel. Ernest E Shaw, 57 (owner of the Cody Enterprise), Dr Karl G Avery, 33, of Powell, Wyoming; and Jack Metzler, 12, of Powell all boarded Shaw's outboard motorboat. Jeff Metzler, Wesley Metzler, and OL Casinger, all of Powell boarded Metzler's boat. A sudden squall probably of spin-off of the earlier storms, caught the two boats about 8:30 pm one-quarter mile east of Rock Point. The Metzler boat was able to make it to make a safe landing, but the Shaw party's boat was driven in high winds toward Rock Point. The high waves capsized the boat, which sank, and all three were drowned, or most probably died of exposure as all were wearing life jackets."
