Info from Jon Hittle In the pre-dawn hours of July 4, 1863, 18-year-old Private Lafayette Campbell was on duty with his company (CO D) of the 36th Iowa Infantry Regiment on the picket line 3/4 of a mile in front of the Battery A redoubt at Helena Arkansas. The federal garrison at Helena had expected an attack by Confederates for several days prior and were ordered to be on special alert. At 3 a.m.,two brigades of Confederates moved forward on the Old St. Francis Road leading into Helena from the north through the rugged bluffs of Crowley's Ridge to attack and capture the battery. Two other large columns moved to attack battery D on the far left flank and Battery C in the center simultaneously. The rebel forces attacking Battery were commanded by General John Marmaduke and consisted to two brigades commanded by Colonel Joe Shelby and Colonel Colton Greene . When Marmaduke's two columns encountered the Union pickets shortly thereafter they opened fire. The first musket volley killed 19-year-old Private Solomon Reynolds and drove the pickets back to within 150 yards of the battery. In the darkness and confusion, Private Campbell and two other men were captured by the enemy. These men were paroled and exchanged the following November and re-joined their regiment which by then had captured and occupied Little Rock, During the ensuing Camden Expedition to southwest Arkansas from late March to April 30, 1864, the 36th Iowa was caught in an ambush at Marks' Mills and some 200 men were captured, including Campbell, and marched to the Confederate prison stockade at Camp Ford, Tyler Texas. Following 10 months in captivity in horrible conditions at Camp Ford, the men who had not died in captivity were paroled and exchanged at Alexandria Louisiana. Brought to New Orleans, they were placed aboard a federal steamer and transported to Iowa for a 30 - day furlough before returning to re-form the 36th Iowa, by then stationed at St. Charles on the White River, Arkansas. They remained there on remote outpost duty to prevent rebel guerrilla attacks on federal steamboats, until August 1865, when they were transported to the federal supply depot at Duvall's Bluff, Arkansas and discharged from federal service. From DeValls Bluff they were transported by river steamer to Davenport Iowa where the men were discharged from state service and the 36th Iowa was disbanded. Lafayette Campbell is believed to be the only member of the regiment to have been captured twice during the war.
