Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors conducted by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars with a Parish Rosary at 5:00 p.m. There will also be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Fred Gums of the Le Mars Bible Church officiating, all at the funeral home. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. Leon Edward Scott was born October 25, 1929 in Randolph, Nebraska, the son of Osborn and Malania (Schmitt) Scott. He attended school in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School. He continued his education at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, where he received his B.A. in Mathematics. Shortly after college, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean Conflict, working on the front line and as company clerk. Following his honorable discharge, he wanted some peace and quiet, so he took his first job in Center, Nebraska, teaching and coaching basketball on Santee Sioux Reservation. He was united in marriage to Lois Schierloh on August 22, 1954. After their marriage, they moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska. Leon taught for a brief time in South Sioux City before going to work for the Sioux City Community School District, teaching and counseling at Woodrow Wilson and later East High School. During this time, Leon furthered his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he received his Masters degree and Doctorate. After receiving further education, Leon and Lois moved to Le Mars, Iowa where Dr. Scott began teaching at Westmar College in Le Mars. Lois passed away May 20, 1979. During his 32 years with Westmar, he served as department chairman for the education and psychology departments. Later, he was the academic dean for the school and also served as interim president of the college. Leon was united in marriage to Aurelia (Osterman) Conley on January 3, 1981. Leon and Aurelia continued to make their home in Le Mars. Leon was an active member of the Le Mars community, having served on the Le Mars Community School Board for 10 years, St. George's Preschool Board for several years, and the Libertyville Treatment Center Board. Leon was also active in the Le Mars Lions Club, Northwest Iowa Wood Carvers Association, Wasmer American Legion Post 241, Korean War Last Man's Club, and the Sioux City Senior Center. Through the years, Leon enjoyed bowling and participating in leagues for many years. He also enjoyed throwing horseshoes, fishing, bird watching, reading, and cooking, especially his "famous" pancakes. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Aurelia of Le Mars; his children: Susan (Rick) Stream of Le Mars, IA, Jane LeClair of Omaha, NE, Jennifer Scott of Sioux City, IA, Tim (Beth) Conley of Le Mars, IA, Dan (Barbara) Conley of Yorktown, VA, James (Deb) Conley of Le Mars, IA, Joel (Lori) Conley of Merrill, IA, Sue (Rick) Dreckman of Kansas City, MO, and Tom (Kristine) Conley of Fort Collins; 18 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; his brothers: Eugene (Ann) Scott of Phoenix, AZ, Laverne (Connie) Scott of Randolph, NE, Larry Scott of Omaha, NE, and Ronald (Julie) Scott of Fremont, NE; his sister: Donna Beaudette of Holdrege, NE; his in laws: Harold Osterman of Boone, IA, Evelyn (Michael) Ingraham of Tacoma, WA, and Marilyn (Wilmer) Young of Fremont, NE; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; his brothers: Dale, Lowell, Duane, LaMont, and Gerald; his granddaughter: Katherine Stream; and a son in law: Bob "Bear" LeClair.
