Son of Tandy Allen and Joanna Smith Van Nice. OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, September 25, 1956 Dr. Lloyd Allen, Russell Native Dies in Colorado Dr. Lloyd R. Allen, active in professional, civic and fraternal affairs here since 1906, died Sunday at a local hospital. He would have been 78 on Sept. 27. Born Sept. 27, 1878, in Russell, Ia., he received his medical education at Northwestern University, and came to Colorado Springs in 1906. He was a past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge No. 309 and was the only man who served as exalted ruler for two years. He was also grand esteemed knight of the grand lodge in 1935. Dr. Allen was a member of Tejon Lodge No. 104, AF and AM; Colorado Springs Chapter No. 6, Royal Arch Masons; Grace Episcopal Church, El Paso Club and the Winter Night Club. During World War I, Dr. Allen was mustered into service at the first medical officers training school at Ft. Riley, Kan., in July 1917. He later was battalion surgeon of the 2nd Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, and went overseas in June 1918. He was wounded in the Meuse-Argonne offensive Oct. 28, 1918, and was decorated with the Croix de Guerre by the French government for valor in action Oct. 8, 1918. He was discharged from the service at Ft. Sheridan, Ill., in March, 1919, and was a retired Colonel in the Medical Reserve. Dr. Allen was a member of the American Legion Post No. 5, of which he served a term as commander. He is survived by his wife, Cathryn F. Allen; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Ehrman, San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Isabel Goltry, Russell, Ia.; and two brothers, Charles E. Allen, Portland, Ore.; and Aylmer J. Allen, Russell, Ia.
