HOLMES Loxley George, the youngest child of John and Lydia (Manning) Holmes, was born at Bonaparte on June 7, 1859 and died after a short illness at his home 502 Chester avenue, Ottumwa, at 5:20 o’clock on Monday afternoon, June 11, 1923, aged 64 years and four days. After attending the public schools in his home neighborhood, he attended the Iowa State university and graduated there in dentistry in the class of 1890. After his graduation he settled in Eldon, living there for ten years, at which time he moved to Ottumwa, where he was since lived. In 1884 [sic], he was married to Flora B. Harlan. To this union were born two children, one of whom, Harley J. of Rose Hill, survives. He was again married on October 27, 1904 to Ella Slagle. To this union were born two children, one of whom, Lawrence is living. Besides his wife and two sons, there remain two brothers, J.S. Holmes of Seattle, Wash., and S.M. Holmes of Bonaparte. There are also three grand children, other relatives and many friends who extend their heartfelt sympathy to those bereaved by the sudden passing of their loved one. Dr. Holmes had practised [sic] his profession in Ottumwa for twenty-one years, and was widely and favorable know [sic]. He was an upright, honorable, patriotic citizen. He was quiet, retiring, and somewhat non-communicative in disposition but was a loyal and true friend to those who knew him, and in spite of his quiet ways always enjoyed the company of others. He was kind hearted, cheerful, and obliging. He was a faithful husband, and an indulgent father and will be greatly missed in his home. He joined the Willard Street Methodist church soon after the Sunday meetings and has been a regular attendant and interested member ever since. He was a good Christian man, interested in all that was for the betterment of humanity. Coupled with the grief of his departure is the well grounded hope of future re-union and of his eternal welfare. Funeral services were held at the Willard Street Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon, June 13, conducted by the Rev. A.H. Barker. Interment was made at Shaul cemetery.–Contributed.
