(Based on marriage & children birth dates). Madison Steinberger lost his medical license and changed his name to Crapo assuming the name of another physician from Ohio (G W Crapo). His wife Mary died at the age of 37. The children were around 3, 6, and 8 years old. After Mary's death, Madison took to drinking, and the children were found wandering the street by a neighbor. Two families eventually adopted the children. The research can be somewhat confusing because Madison did use a friend's medical license, and changed his family's last name to Crapo. The 3 children Marclyn/Charles/Ernest were adopted out to two different families. - contributed by J Fred and Sandra Madden, with some info from Shirley Park & Cynthia Marsh. ~~~ "Crapo, G.W. Chico Chronicle-Record, Saturday, February 25, 1893, pg 3 col 3: Death of Dr. Crapo. Dr. George W. Crapo, who was a well known character all over this section of the country, breathed his last in his room over Waddam’s gun shop on Saturday morning, after an illness of about three weeks. He was 47 years old and a native of Ohio. He has practiced medicine in Chico for many years. He leaves three children, his wife having died several years ago. The funeral took place from Bicknell’s undertaking parlors at 10 o’clock yesterday and the burial services were conducted by Rev. J.E. Barnes. ~~~ [no age provided], Madison D.
