Marlon Eugene Shelton was born May 5, 1923, on a farm five miles north of Calamus, Iowa, to Harley Games Shelton and Alice Pauline (Johnson) Shelton. He attended public school in North Dakota, Wheatland and Calamus, Iowa, and was confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, rural Calamus. Upon high school graduation, Marlon was employed as a carpenter until enlisting in the Navy. His naval service included training at Purdue University and 87th and Anthony, Chicago, as an aviation electrician. He then served in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific on the island of Majuro, building an emergency landing field. Marlon was honorably discarged from service in December of 1944. On January 20, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Elaine Hass at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, rural Calamus. He attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, and following graduation in 1947, Dr. Shelton continued on the faculty at Palmer and worked with his uncle, Dr. C.J. Christensen in DeWitt. In 1949 he began his own chiropractic practice in Oelwein, Iowa, where he remained until 1964. In 1964 the family returned to DeWitt, where Dr. Shelton practiced chiropractic, until 1989 when he retired. Dr. Shelton was an energetic, honest, caring person with high integrity. His hobbies included antique auto restoration and carpentry. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238, DeWitt, and was a former active member of the Oelwein Rotary and Jaycees and an antique auto club in Clinton County. Surviving are his wife, Elaine; a son, Jim Shelton, DeWitt; two daughters, Shirley (Dillon) Franks, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Sally Scott, Clarkston, Michigan; grandchildren, Kelli (Brian) Bruckman, Solon, Iowa, Carri (Trent) Marando, Bettendorf, Iowa, Lindsey (Julian) Mortensen, New York, New York, Reed Young, Charlottesville, James R. (Chandler) Shelton, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Melissa Sopousek, Los Angeles, California, Steven Scott and Rachel Scott, Clarkston; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Jade, Ryan, Dillon, Alexis and Matthew; and a brother, DeVere (Joan) Shelton, Calamus. Preceding Dr. Shelton in death were a son, Robert, a son-in-law, Bryan Scott, and his parents. The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2007. Service of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2007, in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Calamus.
