It had entered the pleural cavity, making a deep wound, three inches in length on the outside. The wound was extremely dangerous, for the reason that inflammation might ensue, which would in all probability involve the lungs. Mr. Streett was confined to his room for three weeks and has complained of the effects of the wound since. Dr. Jarrett showed how the knife might have been held to produce such a wound." Donna Jones added the following: Cornelia Nixon, whose ancestors were Cairnes, wrote a novel called Jarrettsville. It was based on an actual event that occurred April 10, 1869. Martha Jane Cairnes rode a horse to the hotel directly across the road from Dr. Jarrett's house. She went into the hotel bar and encountered her fiancé, Nicholas McComas. According to the story, Dr. Jarrett, in hearing the commotion, came out of his house to see Martha Jane shoot Nicholas two more times. Dr. Jarrett went over to render assistance but Nicholas died. Both Nicholas and Martha Jane are buried in the same cemetery at Bethel Presbyterian Church. The rest of the story is some fiction mixed with facts.
