Read More	Dr. Blair was born in Union county March 18th, 1867, near Philadelphia church in Lanes Creek township. He is a son of Dr. J. Sebron Blair, deceased, and the late Mrs. Addie Parks Blair. He attended the high schools of Cabarrus county and graduated at Davidson College, taking the degree of Bachelor Science in 1890. He then read medicine under Drs. E. S. E. A. and Walter Ashe of Wadesboro, after which he attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore. He returned to North Carolina, stood an examination before the State Board and located at Olive Branch, N. C., where he practiced from the spring of 1893 to the fall of '94. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond and graduated therefrom in 1895 and again located at Olive Branch until the fall of 1897. Desiring to further equip himself for the duties of his profession, he then attended the Polyclinic in New York City, taking a post-graduate course for three months, two of which he was second assistant to the celebrated Dr. Pryor. Next he located to Troy, N. C., until the spring of 1898, and remained there until 1906, since which time he has been in Marshville. He enjoys a very fine practice. He is a good representative of the highly bred, cultivated and open-hearted Southern character. The Monroe Journal Monroe, NC Tuesday, July 18, 1911 ---------- DR. MOTT PARKS BLAIR. When the federated clubs of Marshville recently elected Dr. Mott Parks Blair the outstanding citizen of that town, the editor of The Monroe Journal, Mr. R. F. Beasley, paid him the following striking tribute: 'The Marshville people are going to honor themselves tonight; I say, honor themselves, though the occasion is to be in honor of Dr. Mott Blair, that old crank who has wormed his way into the hearts of the Marshville people. In this day of hurry a community that has time and the inclination to take a while off and make a tangible and emphatic effort to show their love and appreciation of the work of a man while he is yet living shows itself to be worthy of honor along with the recipient of their expressions. They are to be congratulated more, if possible, than Dr. Blair. I cannot think of anything finer and more just than this occasion and the record that calls it forth. And this is not only a tribute to Dr. Blair but to all family doctors who go about as he does ministering to the sick and suffering. Marshville people are to be congratulated not only for having Dr. Blair among them but for the fine spirit which prompts them to give an expression of their love." Dr. Blair is the son of Dr. James Seaborn Blair and Anna Parks Blair of Cabarrus county. He was born in Lane Creek township, Union county. His father was born in Lancaster county South Carolina, but was reared in Mecklenburg county, North Carolina. Mott Parks Blair was 13 years old when his father died and for a number of years thereafter he assisted his mother in supporting the family. In 1890 he was graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Davidson college. He studied medicine with Drs. W. A. and W. E. Ash at Wadesboro, also attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Baltimore and as an undergraduate began the practice of medicine in Olive Branch, Union county in 1893. He was graduated from the Medical college of Virginia at Richmond in 1895 and had post-graduate work in the New York Polyclinic. In 1898 he located at Troy, N. C., removing six years later to Marshville where his father before him followed the medical profession. He is a member of the county, State and S. A. L. Medical associations. VALUE INESTIMABLE. Mrs. A. L. Marsh of Marshville said of Dr. Blair: "It would be impossible to estimated the value of this man to this community. He is a vital part because he has known the suffering of souls and spirits of great numbers of people in the surrounding community as well as their aching bodies. All these things have burdened him because of his genuine heartache at the distress of suffering humanity. He has never put personal gain above service to mankind. This is proven by the fact that he never refuses to answer a call of distress day or night to the poorest home regardless of remuneration. There is never a night too dark or cold to keep him from the bedside of those who look to him as their only source of help. It is well known that in numbers of homes that he has found destitute of the necessities of life, he has not only contributed his services and medicine but also clothes and food. He does these things with secrecy but the grateful recipients cannot keep it -- it is obliged to be revealed in more ways than one. For many years it has been his custom to drive his car all over the community for several days before Christmas giving food, fruit, candies and toys in homes where he knew there would be little Christmas cheer. He would never tell one about this and possibly would not admit it, if questioned. Brotherly love and service to his fellow man is the essence of his religion. A trait of character which has commanded love and respect is his love for the right and his hatred for the wrong. He has indeed helped Marshville to be a better place in which to live. He is loved by all, big and little, black and white." Despite the fact that he has led a very busy life, Dr. Blair is a prolific reader. He enjoys the resources of a fine private library and has a great store of information, always keeping apace with the best ideas and ideals. Whenever he finds a leisure moment to read or study, he makes use of it. It is said one seldom goes into his office without finding a book or magazine he has just laid down. He was much impressed by the great Japanese Christian, Kagawa, whom he heard preach during his tour of this country. In the practical application of their religion in everyday ministry to the needy, the lives of these two men are much alike. 35 YEARS OF SERVICE. "The federated clubs of Marshville arranged a meeting at which the community expressed their love for this man, who has given 35 years of service to us," said Mrs. Oscar Perkins, president of the Woman's club. "On this occasion the school auditorium was packed to capacity with people from all over the State who gathered to do honor to a noble character. A loving cup was presented to him on which was engraved, 'Service to Humanity.' In voting this honor the clubs used the following points: Unselfishness, Progressiveness, contribution of time, means and influence, co-operation with all the best interests of the community. These qualities sum up his character as a whole, but it would be impossible to enumerate all the acts of kindness that have endeared him to this section and easily make him the most outstanding citizen." Mrs. Blair was Miss Mary Barrett of Peachland. Dr. Blair has four children by a former marriage. He has recently returned from a trip to Russia where he made an intensive study of conditions. A keen thinker and a good speaker, his experiences are most interesting. In regard to his observations and studies, he says: "The Red Flag floats over 170,000,000 people in the vast domain of Russia in which dwell 150 different nationalities. When the Bolsheviks came into power in 1917, four-fifths of the population were peasants engaged in agriculture in the most primitive way. Their backwardness was appalling, more than 70 per cent being illiterate. Their standards of living were of the lowest and in technical and industrial development Russia was more than 100 years behind the more advanced nations of the west. After three years of disastrous warfare in which the dead numbered 4,000,000, the country was completely disorganized, $6,000,000,000 worth of property destroyed, bread lines steadily growing longer and foreign commerce eliminated by the economic blockade of the allies. "It cannot be denied that conditions in Russia have improved. The new Russia is of course a great deal smaller than the old, the total loss of land equal to the combined area of France and England. It contained the most highly developed industries of the empire and their loss has had a far-reaching effect on Russian economy. The theory and practice of central economic planning has made great headway and there is no unemployment there. Begging was one of Russia's greatest professions and was practiced by more than 1,000,000. Two years ago it was estimated that there were less than 50,000. I saw only three while there. This is a great achievement. "In the five year plan there was one section devoted to culture and education and another to science. Illiteracy has been almost eradicated, the more than 70 per cent, being reduced to seven per cent. The number of school children has been increased from 8,000,000 to 26,000,000 and there are four times the number of students in the higher educational institutions. The spread of education is not just in the cities but millions of peasants are awakening to an enlightened life. Old customs and superstitions of the peasants were difficult to overcome and only by education could this be done. For example, the peasants were accustomed to walk through the fields, led by a priest who sprinkled holy water on the crops and uttered holy incantations against harmful insects. Russia has had to carry on a strenuous campaign of enlightment to uproot such time hallowed practices. Ninety per cent of the anti-religious propaganda in Russia is directed against superstitions just as absurd. "In view of recent events in Germany it is interesting to know that in Russia anti-semitism is considered a crime. Stalin calls persecution of the Jews a 'remnant of the era of cannibalism.' "Russia has made striking and solid contribution to the goal of international peace and at different times has shown a sincere desire for a real disarmament, frequently embarrassing the various countries in the conferences at Geneva by its far-reaching proposals toward this end. The Russian government signed the Kellogg peace pact and now has non-aggressive pacts with all boarder states, except Japan and Chine, both of which have rebuffed them. In September 1935, the Soviet became a member of the League of Nations. In all of these peace negotiations and in many others also, Latvinov took the lead, finally bringing about recognition by America." The Charlotte Observer Charlotte, NC Sunday, November 8, 1936
