Canaday, age 71, of Hagerstown, one of the oldest physicians of eastern Indiana, died here this afternoon at 12:30 o'clock at the home of his son Dr. C. E. Canaday, 1411 Church St. Dr. Canaday had been sick since Christmas when he came here on a visit, becoming suddenly ill at the home of his son, where he has remained since. Up to this time Dr. Canaday had been actively practicing medicine at Hagerstown, which he has been a physician for the last forty-nine years. Besides being a prominent physician Dr. Canaday was also prominent in many public affairs of Hagerstown and Wayne county. Many friends at Hagerstown will be greatly shocked by the news of his death as he was in very good health when he came to Newcastle for the Christmas visit. The veteran physician was born on a farm near Newcastle and was the son of Nathan and Nancy Leeson Canaday, who were pioneer residents of Henry county. Dr. Canaday, after taking a medical course, located at Hagerstown, where, for the last forty-nine years he has been practicing. Although at a very advanced age, Dr. Canaday would not give up his practice until he was confined to his bed, chosing to serve his community to the last rather than enjoy a retired life. The deceased is survived by one son, one sister and two brothers. His wife died a number of years ago. The son is Dr. C. E. Canaday, at whose home he passed away. Mrs. J. M. Gough is a sister and M. M. and Henry Canaday are the brothers. All the relatives named are of this city."
