Dr. Watts was active in providing health care for Jellico area citizens for a number of years. Read More	Dr. Ned C. Watts, 94, Jellico civic leader, dies Jellico Advance-Sentinel Funeral services were held Sunday for Dr. Ned C. Watts, longtime Jellico physician and civic leader. He was 94. Dr. Watts was active in providing health care for Jellico area citizens for a number of years. He came out of retirement to help establish and serve as first Chief of Staff for Jellico Community Hospital. He was born in Taylorsville, North Carolina and graduated from Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. He and his brother-in-law, the late Dr. Carl Ausmus, worked as partners from 1939 until 1959 in the old Jellico Hospital. Active in several organizations, he served on the LMU Alumni Board of Directors, as Vice-President of Union Bank, President of the Jellico Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the Official Board and Trustees of the United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees of the Laurel Fork-Clear Fork Health Center (please see more details on obituary page). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Ausmus Watts in 1959. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, JoAnn Llewellyn Watts. Other survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Ned C. Watts and Elizabeth Pike Watts and Phillip Llewellyn Watts and Teresa Dykes Watts; grandchildren Melissa Carol Watts and Justin Llewellyn Watts; mother-in-law Thelma Wilson LLewellyn; sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Lenwood Lay and several nieces and nephews. Services for Dr. Watts were conducted at Jellico United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Hedrick and Dr. Chuck Summers officiating. Burial was in Jellico Cemetery with Llewellyn Funeral Mome of Jellico in charge of the arrangements. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He's considered as the "Hero Doctor of Jellico" on July 6th, 1944, when a train carrying 1,006 Army troops and recruits derailed and plunged into a ravine. He was driving alone that evening with no idea what had happened, until he was flagged down by a survivor that stood on the side of the road wearing only his underwear. From there, he spent several hours as the only doctor at the tragic scene, till hundreds of Campbell County residents, mostly miners, flocked to the scene to help with the rescues.
