He became a medical doctor and served in this capacity during the Civil War. He became quite prosperous and was able to provide a college education for several of his children. He married Mary Ann Nading on September 22, 1863, in East Bend, NC. Mary Ann's brother, Sanford Nading, ran the Ferry that crossed the Yadkin River near Old Salem, N.C.
