Description	:	Norman Smith was born in Mont Vernon, NH and moved to Groton, MA in his 20s with his cousin, F. O. Kittredge, where the two were employed making fancy boxes. He attended Vermont Medical School, Woodstock, VT, graduating in 1843 after studying under his brother, Dr. Jesse Kittredge Smith of Mont Vernon, NH. Dr. Smith developed a successful medical and surgical practice in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire and practiced out of his home on Main Street, Groton, MA. He attended Vermont Medical School, Woodstock, VT, graduating in 1843 after studying under his brother, Dr. Jesse Kittredge Smith of Mont Vernon, NH. Dr. Smith developed a successful medical and surgical practice in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire and practiced out of his home on Main Street, Groton, MA. He served with the Massachusetts "Old Sixth" Regiment when it heeded Lincoln's call for troops to defend Washington, DC at the beginning of the Civil War in April, 1861. He was with the regiment when it fought its way through the Baltimore Riots on April 19, 1861 when he treated the first casualties and deaths of the Civil War. He conducted the first amputation of the Civil War during the regiment's stay in Washington off of the Rotunda of the Capitol in the Old Chambers of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a noted singer and was known for his sharp wit. He was a deeply patriotic and spiritual man and was an active farmer in his later years dying on his farm on Common Street. He married five times and lost all four of his wives and the children of those marriages by the time he was 49. He married a fifth time to Mary Jane King who survived him along with the children of that marriage, Norman Kittredge, Frederick Lee, and Laura.
