Read More	GLOUCESTER POINT — Dr. Paul Hogg Sr., 82, a pioneer in pediatrics in Newport News and a pediatrician in the community for half a century, died Thursday, May 13. The native of Gloucester County received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his pediatric residency in New York City and in Wilmington, N.C.. Dr. Hogg started his practice on the Peninsula in 1937, using innovative techniques that he learned while working at Babies Hospital in Wilmington. C.W. Beaven, who retired in 1984, joined the practice in 1946. Hogg-Beaven Pediatrics was originally on 28th Street near West Avenue in downtown Newport News, later moving to 29th Street near West Avenue in the late 1940s. Beaven remembers, ``All of his patients were crazy about him, and he was a thorough pediatric man. I was privileged to be in practice with him.'' According to Beaven, Dr. Hogg was one of the early pioneers in the area in the exchange transfusion process for babies with the Rh factor, and people wrote from all over the country for information. In the early 1950s, the practice became the Children's Clinic and in the early '60s moved to its present location on Main Street. ``He was highly regarded by all of his colleagues and all who knew him,'' said Beaven. The practice was affiliated with various local hospitals, including Dixie Hospital, now Hampton General; Whitaker Hospital, later Newport News General, on a consulting basis; Riverside Hospital; and Buxton Hospital, now known as Mary Immaculate. Watts Booth, who was associated with the firm since 1953, says, ``He treated me like an older brother. He was a big help to me, and any measure of success I've had in this area and in the field of pediatrics was largely due to his helping me. He was held in very high regard.'' Booth described his colleague as ``sort of the father of pediatrics, as we know it, in Newport News.'' Another colleague, Thomas Caldroney, was head of pediatric services at Fort Eustis in 1952 when he first met Dr. Hogg, then serving as a consulting physician. Caldroney says, ``He was the first of the board certified pediatricians in the area. He was a very capable, caring, dedicated physician.'' ``He always had an open door policy. No one was ever turned away,'' said Caldroney. The Rev. Paul Hogg said some of his best memories about his father are when he went with him as he made house calls, shining a light on house numbers to find the way. ``My mother used to tell us that he would come in at 4 a.m. and go back out at 5 a.m.,'' Rev. Hogg said. He also assisted his father in writing a pamphlet, ``50 Years of Pediatric Practice,'' which told about his early years as a pediatrician and many of the early treatments for diseases. John Roger Hogg, who joined his father's practice in 1968 as a result of seeing his father's work and efforts in the field of pediatrics, said, ``We've adapted to change and we provide a service and that is what he was proud of. He said that if you did your job, everything else would come.'' During his active years of pediatric practice, Dr. Hogg served on the board of State Medical Examiners and as a trustee of the MCV Alumni Association. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International for his work on the World Wide Polio Immunization Campaign. Dr. Hogg was past president of the Newport News Medical Society, Peninsula Academy of Medicine, Virginia Chapter of the Society for Crippled CHildren, the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Peninsula Chapter of the MCV Alumni Association. Following his retirement, he served as junior and senior warden on the vestry of Abingdon Episcopal Church. He was married to Dorothy Williams in 1935; she died in 1975. He is survived by a daughter, Rebecca H. Sherman of Newport News; two sons, John Roger Hogg of Newport News and the Rev. Paul Hogg Jr. of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren. Visitation was from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Hogg Funeral Home. A funeral was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, by the Rev. Dennis J.J. Schmidt.
