Flory Passes Away Sunday Night- A Native of Pawnee City, He Had Spent Most of His Life Here. The thread of life was in his power to mend so skillfully for others, snapped for Dr. Paul J. Flory Sunday evening. As a Pawnee City boy, who started the medical practice here, later was commissioned in the navy during the World war, and since then was an active member of the Pawnee Medical Unit, Doctor Flory's death came as a grievious shock to the countless friends his activities brought him in contact with. Doctor Flory drove out of town late Sunday afternoon in the hospital's auto. His failure to return that evening occasioned a quiet search Monday. Tuesday morning searching parties were organized here and shortly after noon the tragedy was discovered. The auto had been driven into the farm yard of the unoccupied Vernon Farwell farm, five miles southeast of here, and death came from the carbon monoxcide gassing, apparently self-arranged with a hose from the exhaust. The shock of the doctor's sudden passing brings sympathetic feeling from his many friends, aware of an illness that six years ago took him to Tucson, Ariz., for an extended rest cure and his re-shouldering of responsibilities at his office here after his return. Along with his practice and specialization in eye, ear, nose and throat work, the doctor kept up a keen interest in community affairs. He also was a medical examiner for the county draft board. Paul Jones Flory, second son of George S. and Ann Davis Flory, was born at Pawnee City Dec. 25, 1889. With the exception of one year when the family home was at Beatrice and one year at Humboldt, his home was here during his entire life. He was a graduate of the Pawnee City high school and the University of Nebraska college of medicine. After completing an interneship in a San Francisco hospital, he was commissioned as a lietenant in the medical corps of the United States navy and during World war was stationed at Great Lakes, near Chicago. Oct. 6, 1917, he was married to Ann Wright of Schuyler, and his wife accompanied him to Great Lakes. At the close of the war they came to Pawnee City and since that time he had been engaged in the practice of medicine here. When the Pawnee Medical Unit was formed he became a member. He is survived by his wife; a son, David, a freshman at the University of Nebraska; a daughter, Barbara, at home; a sister, Miss Agnes Flory of Brookings, S.D.; two brothers, Harry D. and John T. of Pawnee City, and other relatives. He was a member of various Masonic bodies and the Pawnee City Methodist church. For several years he served as a member of the board of education and was its secretary at the time of his death. Family services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 at the home and interment will be in the Pawnee City cemetery.
