Bohannon, 87, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Little Creek Nursing Home in Knoxville, TN. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Bob was born on February 5, 1922 near Holton. He was the son of J. Everett and Florence Backman Bohannon. Following high school graduation, he attended Kansas State University until his education was interrupted by military service in World War II. Following the end of the war, he resumed his education at Michigan State University. After earning his B.S. degree, he returned to Manhattan, KS where he completed a masters' degree in agronomy from Kansas State University. Later, he received his doctorate in soil science from the University of Illinois. He completed a post doctorate at the University of Michigan in higher education. He returned to Kansas State University to serve on the staff for the next thirty-five years. He joined the KSU Cooperative Extension Service as a state specialist in agronomy. Later, he became the assistant to the Vice President for Agriculture and was also named the International Director of Agriculture. In that capacity, he led teams of agriculturalists in Nigeria and India, helping farmers in those countries increase crop and animal production. That was the effort he found most rewarding. He later became the Director of the Cooperative Extension Service for the state of Kansas. He finished his career at USDA in Washington, DC as the national program leader for Soil and Water Conservation Districts. He moved to Greenville, NC in 1987 to join his wife, Judy, who was on the staff at East Carolina University. He was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church and served as president of United Methodist Men. He attended the men's Sunday school class and participated in several Disciple classes and Community Bible Study. He was also a member of the Cape Fear Emmaus Community. He served on the Pitt County Agriculture Committee and the Pitt County Board of Adjustment. He was also a member of the Greenville Noon Rotary and the Upper Crust Coffee Club. He delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Due to declining health, he and his wife moved to Knoxville, TN in 2008. Bob's enthusiasm for life was evidenced by his outgoing personality and his firm handshake. He loved his family, his country, the land, and education. He was always appreciative he got to "make this life's journey." He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Jean Waugh Bohannon, and two daughters, Kathryn Bohannon Folks, and Karen Bohannon Verti Hungate. He is survived by his second wife, Judy Bohannon, Knoxville, TN. Other survivors include a daughter, Ellen Bohannon Oppenlander, Clark, MO, a step-son and daughter-in-law, John and Suzanne Dorton, Knoxville, TN, a brother and sister-in-law, John and Grace Bohannon, Topeka, KS, four grandchildren, Maria Verti and Scott Verti, Denver, CO, Josh Oppenlander, Columbia, MO, Jimmy Oppenlander, serving in the US Army in Afganistan, and two step-grandsons, Ben Dorton and Gardner Dorton, Knoxville, TN. Because Bob was such an advocate for education, tributes may be sent to the Bohannon Memorial Scholarship, Kansas 4-H Foundation, Inc. 116 Umberger Hall, Manhattan, KS 66505.
