| Description | : | He was born at Moss Neck and received his early education at the close by Rappahannock Academy. He studied medicine at the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1856. He commenced the practice of medicine in Caroline in 1857. In 1861 he joined the Confederate Army as Examining Surgeon for Caroline County. By 1862 he was Assistant Surgeon at Keen Hospital in Richmond.
