Bob was born on a farm west of Milford, NE to Stanley and Ruby (Smith) Eicher. He was the 4th of 5 children, and graduated from Milford High in 1944. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for 1 year, prior to being drafted. He served his country for 2 years in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he returned to the University and completed his Bachelor's degree in Business in 1950. He accepted a position at the Nebraska State Trade School in Milford in 1951. In 1952, he met and married his wife of 58 years, Janice Cochran Eicher, and had 3 daughters. He was promoted to assistant director of the renamed Nebraska Vocational Technical School, a position he held until 1969. During this time, he completed his Masters and Doctorate in Education at the University of Nebraska in 1963 and 1968. In 1969 Bob and Jan moved with their three daughters to Ankeny, IA, where he worked for the Des Moines Area Community College. During this time, the Nebraska Legislature created the state's current Community College system. Bob returned to Lincoln in 1973 to serve as the first President of the newly-formed Southeast Community College, a position he held until 1992. During his distinguished tenure as President, the Lincoln campus was built, and the school grew to serve 15 counties in southeastern Nebraska. One of his proudest accomplishments was his role in founding the SCC Foundation. He served as Foundation Chair until 2011. Bob dedicated his life's work to the field of technical and community college education, and worked tirelessly to expand and improve the program offerings and public perception of SCC. In 1992, Bob was given the Meritorious Service Award by the Nebraska Association of Community College Trustees. He was awarded an Alumni Achievement Award in 2002 by the University of Nebraska, an award given annually to alumni who have a record of outstanding achievements in their career. In 2003, Bob was honored by the UNL Teachers College Alumni Association as a Distinguished Graduate. In 1991, the main classroom building on the SCC Milford campus was named the Robert S. Eicher Technical Center in honor of his contributions to the school. Bob was an avid sportsman, playing basketball and baseball in his youth, and coaching teams and refereeing as a young man. Bob had a lifelong love of golf, and was proud of being able to "golf his age" in his senior years. He was an accomplished carpenter, and spent many hours working on construction and furniture refinishing projects after retirement. He was a member of member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Bob's career was marked by his leadership, integrity and vision. His many friends knew him for his willingness to lend a hand, as well as his compassion and humor. He was a lifelong disciple of Christ, and sang the gospel songs of his youth up to his passing. His positive influence and work ethic touched many lives, including family, friends, co-workers and students. Dr. Eicher was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Duane and Ken; and his wife, Janice who passed away on May 10, 2011. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Rick MacInnes, Omaha, Nancy Eicher, Minneapolis, and Diane and Doug Caulkins, Denver, CO; grandchildren, Alissa Alden MacInnes Johnson (Beau), Amy Kaye MacInnes (fiancé, Dan Podlesak), Kyle Lynn Caulkins, and Corey Robert Caulkins; brother, Derald (Dee) Eicher, Lincoln; sister, Margie Hendrick, Boulder, CO; and many nieces and nephews. MEMORIAL SERVICE 11am Thursday, May 10, St. Mark's United Methodist Church, with Pastor Wayne Alloway, officiating. Burial 9am, Pleasant View Cemetery, Milford.
