San Francisco—A memorial service is being planned for Dr. Roberta Fenlon, who was the first woman president of the San Francisco Medical Society and California Medical Society. Miss Fenlon died at the Pacific Medical Center on Aug. 31 after being hospitalized for a heart ailment. She was 75. The daughter of a county doctor in Iowa who took livestock as pay for medical services, she worked her way through Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. In 1971, she became president of the California Medical Society. She had an active practice as an internist and was on the staff of Children's Hospital, Ralph K. Davies Medical Center, the University of California at San Francisco hospitals and Pacific Medical Center. Miss Fenlon also was on the faculty of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine for many years, and in 1980, received its Charlotte Bear Award for teaching. She also was named distinguished alumnus of the University of Iowa in 1981. Miss Fenlon was not married. Survivors include nieces and nephews outside California Roberta Florence Fenlon was born in Clinton, Iowa, on June 13, 1911, the daughter of Dr. Robert L. Fenlon and Florence Prime Fenlon. Educated in Clinton schools and at Iowa State University, she received her medical degree from the University of Iowa, and became an intern at San Francisco General Hospital in 1941. Dr. Fenlon then became a resident at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco, where she continued as a professor of clinical medicine until the 1980s. She also maintained a private practice and became active in the San Francisco Medical Society. After editing the society newsletter and serving in other positions on the board of directors, she went on the board of the California Medical Association. In 1970 she was elected president of the CMA, the first woman to hold that position. In these leadership positions, she played an active role in the medical profession's response to the state and federal legislation expanding public services for health care, including the 1964 Medicare and Medicaid bills and controversies over administration of the California programs of the California Office of Health Care Services, later Department of Benefit Payments, from 1970 to 1974. In addition to a life-long interest in voluntary solutions to community health and social problems, Dr. Fenlon enjoyed gardening and reading. She died in San Francisco on August 31, 1987.
