Description	:	Years ago Roger's father planted numerous evergreen trees on two sides of the Baptist Cemetery at Uehling. He'd carried "tons" of water to the trees to help them root and grow. Roger A. “Bud” Clough, 78, of Omaha died Wednesday while visiting relatives in northern Wisconsin. Clough twice served the schools of Lincoln. He was the principal of Everett Junior High from 1963 to 1966, moving on to become superintendent in Ord, York and Mason City, Iowa, before returning to Lincoln in 1982 as superintendent. In 1985, he left for St. Louis County, Mo., retiring from the district there in 1997. Clough was born in Uehling on May 22, 1935, and is survived by his wife, Margaret, and three sons who live outside of Nebraska. He received his masters and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Nebraska in 1959 and 1972. Clough won the Missouri Superintendent of the Year award in 1997 and was president of the Missouri Association of School Administrators from 1996-1997. Preceded in death by parents, Tony and Bernice Clough; sister, LaNelle Clough. Survived by wife, Margaret Clough; 3 sons: Marc Clough (Pam) of Marble Rock, Iowa, Mike Clough (Arlene) of Urbandale, Iowa, and Marty Clough (Amy) of Zurich, Switzerland; 7 grandchildren: Robert Clough (Bri) of Hartford, CT, Lindi Nelson (Ben) of Des Moines, IA, Katy Clough of West Des Moines, IA, Charlie Clough of Chicago, IL, Madeline Clough, currently attending the University of Iowa, Sofie Clough and Bo Clough, both of Switzerland; 2 great-grandchildren, Thomas Nelson and Max Nelson, both of Des Moines; brother, David Clough (Donna) of Lake Bluff, IL; cousins: Carolee Laughren, Jim Realph (Pam), and Sharon Landholm. Special mention to his buddy, Preston Ricker. Roger's and Margaret's church home is St. Luke's Methodist Church in Omaha. Roger passed peacefully while he and Margaret were visiting relatives in northern Wisconsin early Wednesday morning. Roger was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be remembered as an eternal optimist, always finding the good in people and situations. Roger cared: he found ways to encourage family, friends, strangers and coworkers to see the silver lining in every opportunity or obstacle. Roger never met a stranger and had a unique ability to find connections with people he met. Beyond family, Dr. Clough's passion was Education. He spent a career helping students in many different capacities: school Superintendent, Principal, Teacher, and Coach. Roger was an avid high school sports fan and supporter of school activities, often donning a blazer or suit in the color of his home team. He was also a competitor. Whether it was golf, sheepshead (a card game), handball, or cribbage with the nieces, nephews and grandkids, he always played to win (he might have lost a few intentionally with the kids, but he would never admit it). Roger enjoyed watching all the children's and grandchildren's activities with Margaret. They logged many miles to watch grandchildren excel in football, basketball, gymnastics, Circus Juventas, dance, hockey, soccer, show choir, music and theatre. Roger was a leader. He served a four-year term on the St. Louis Lambert Airport Commission from 1993-1997. He assisted Sanford N. McDonnell, CEO and Chairman of the Board-McDonnell Douglas Corp., to establish the CHARACTERplus K-12 program. He won the Missouri Superintendent of the Year award in 1997 and served as President of the Missouri Association of School Administrators from 1996-1997. Dr. Clough also was a participant in the St. Louis Federal Desegregation Plan from 1988-1997. Roger was a 1952 graduate of Uehling High School in Uehling, Nebraska. In 1956 he graduated from Midland College in Fremont, NE with a BS in Education and received his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Education from the University of Nebraska in 1959 and 1972, respectively. His career took him to Polk, Nebraska in 1956 as a coach and teacher, and then to Yutan, Nebraska where, starting in 1959, he was Superintendent of Schools. Next, Roger moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1963 to become Principal at Everett Junior High. Starting in 1966 he was Superintendent of Schools in Ord, Nebraska, and then held the Superintendent's position in York, Nebraska in 1968. He moved to Mason City, Iowa to become the Superintendent of Mason City Schools in 1975. In 1982 Roger returned to Lincoln to become Superintendent of Schools there. His next move was to Pattonville School District in St. Louis County, Missouri in 1985 until he retired in 1997. He was Interim Superintendent of Schools in Arlington, Nebraska in 2000.
