Read More	Boone News Republican October 8 1956 Dr. Ross E. Gunn, 74, beloved Boone doctor died at the Boone County hospital Sunday morning following a lengthy illness. While he had not been well for a number of years, he didnt become bedfast until June 11. Born in Green City, Mo., Jan. 19, 1882, he came to Iowa when a young man and graduated from Seymour, Iowa, high school and Central College at Pella. He attended the medical school at the University of Iowa graduating in 1911 and practiced medicine in the southern part of the state until he went to the University of Chicago for post graduate work. In 1922 Dr. Gunn came to Boone and had practiced here since that time. The Gunn family had made their home at 203 Mamie Eisenhower avenue west since 1925. In 1938 he was named to the office of city health officer and held that position at the time of his death. He was a member of the county, state and national medical societies and also the American Academy of General Practice. He was a member of the First Baptist church and a life deacon. He sang in the choir for more than 30 years and had taught a class of Junior high age boys for many years. Other organizations to which he belonged include the various Masonic orders, Order of Eastern Star, High 12, Sportsmans club, a charter member of the Boone Garden club and charter member of the Boone Civic Male chorus. He will be best remembered for his untiring interest in the youth of the community, both boys and girls. In September 1955 the Boone County Medical Society honored him at a dinner at which time high tribute was paid his outstanding work in this community. At that time his portrait was ordered hung in the doctors lounge of the Boone County hospital, the first of such to be hung in the new hospital. Survivors include his wife Ella, two sons Robert of Kansas City, Mo., and Wendell, stationed in the U.S. Army at Camp Fuji, Japan; two daughters, Mrs. Francis L. (Helen) Webster, Cincinnati, Ohio and Mrs. Charles K. (Edith) Cobb, Denver, Colo., two brothers, John F. Gunn, Grand Junction, Colo., and Waldo E. Gunn, Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Harley Nye, Ozone, Arkansas, Mrs. Harold Brightwell and Mrs. Otis Hixson of Chariton and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock from the First Baptist church with Dr. LaRue Jensen, pastor of the church in charge. The entire choir of the church will sing at the services in tribute to the doctor. Burial will be in Linwood Park cemetery with Masonic services at the graveside. Friends may call at the Welin chapel until 10:30 oclock Tuesday morning when the body will be taken to the church where the casket will not be opened.
