Ruel Beeson died at his home in Fairfield Township May 15, 1877, in the 67th year of his age. Highland County has sustained no heavier loss than that she now feels in the death of this distinguished citizen. Mr. Beeson's life was one of increasing activity. Early in life he studied, and for a short time practiced medicine. This was abandoned and the profession of the law taken up. In 1843, he graduated in company with John Applegate, John B. Groebeck, John B. Moorman and others, at the Law Department of the Cincinnati College. He never gave himself exclusively to this profession, but during the remainder of his life continued to practice in connection with other business. The extend of his ability and usefulness is not to be measured by the number of cases he had in court, but rather by the wise counsel given his client's, by which compromise and private adjustment were often reached with the intervention of Courts. For many years he was prominent in the politics of the county and state and filled many positions of honor and trust. He represented the Senatorial district composed of Highland and Fayette counties, in the 48th General Assembly in Ohio with honor to himself and credit to his constituency. He devoted a great portion of his life to the pursuits of agriculture in which he was very successful. He was always an enthusiastic Temperance man, having been connected with all the great Temperance reforms of his day and expanding great energy both in public and in private in his advocacy of this virtue. In short, there was combined in this man more of the elements of good citizenship that is usually found in one individual. Clear conceptions of the right, and native independence of self-reliance were perhaps most prominent among the characteristics that made him the leading spirit of his time in all the public interprisees of the community in which he lived and but for the defectiveness of his social qualities, a kind of reticence so characteristics of the man, he might have been more widely known and the field of his usefulness greatly enlarged. Although never formally connected with the church, he was the friend of religion and manifested during the latter period of his life quite a devotional frame of mind and freely and fully expressed his belief in the Christian religion and his faith in Christ as the Savior of mankind. His loss will be severely felt in the family circle and in the community. May his many values live and reproduce themselves in the lives of all who knew him.
