Description	:	MPH USNR Dr. Rufus Solomon Gardner, 86, of Staunton, died at his home on December 10, 2011. Born July 4, 1925 in Ballston, Virginia, he was the son of Rufus and Velzetta (Rentzel) Gardner. He attended Roanoke College and was a graduate of University of Richmond and Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine. He also received a degree in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Born July 4, 1925 in Ballston, Virginia, he was the son of Rufus and Velzetta (Rentzel) Gardner. He attended Roanoke College and was a graduate of University of Richmond and Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine. He also received a degree in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Doctor Gardner began practice of Internal Medicine in 1955 at Salisbury, Maryland, and later served as Public Health officer for Wicomico and Somerset Counties, Maryland. During that time he was appointed to the Governor's Committee for Tuberculosis Control for the State of Maryland. In 1971 he relocated to Staunton as Medical Director of Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center at Fishersville, retiring in 1990. He also worked as a physician in the emergency room at King's Daughters' Hospital. Doctor Gardner served on the board of Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and helped start the fishing activity for Camp Dragonfly which he found extremely satisfying. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving for 13 years and enjoyed his membership with the Navy League of the Shenandoah. He was a member of Verona Kiwanis Club and Pleasant View-Spring Hill Ruritan Club where he was honored with the Tom Downing Fellow Award in 2004. Doctor Gardner was a faithful and active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Sutton Gardner; one daughter, Ruth Ann Gardner; three grandchildren, May Li, Sue Lei, and Shan Gardner; one brother, Raymond J. Gardner; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis P. Gardner. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 20ll, in Covenant Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private at Gardner Memorial Cemetery in Hillsville, Virginia.
