He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 67 years, Elizabeth Kennedy Saunders (Betty). Read More	Dr. Samuel Edmund Saunders, Jr., DDS (Sam), 87, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Fredericksburg surrounded by family on Thursday, October 26. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 67 years, Elizabeth Kennedy Saunders (Betty). Born June 25, 1930 the son of Samuel Edmund and Mildred Massie Saunders, he was raised by a loving family on Tye Brook Farm at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Piney River, Virginia. During his early years he excelled in academics and worked in the family business, Saunders Brothers, where they raised apples, peaches, cattle and ran a land surveying business. He was a proud member of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1950B earning a degree in Civil Engineering, and became licensed Professional Engineer. He met the love of his life, Betty, while on a blind date at VMI; they married in 1950. He went on to earn a degree from the Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry and then served as a dental officer in the US Air Force in Charleston, SC. In 1956, he and Betty moved to Fredericksburg where he started a long career in dentistry. For several years, he practiced with his father-in-law, Dr. C. P. Kennedy. He then started his own practice while for several years his daughter, Elizabeth, practiced with him. He retired from dentistry in the early 90’s. He often spoke of how rewarding his dental career was, in particular, working with his wonderful staff and patients through the years. Outside his dental career, he took the greatest joy in being at Betty’s side as they raised their four children, and spent time with extended family and friends. After retirement, he enjoyed keeping busy traveling with Betty, spending time with his grandchildren, reading a great book and tending to his rose garden. He also loved visiting his family and boyhood home in Piney River. The thrill of cheering on his beloved VMI Keydets as they took the field for a football game, never grew old. He loved his visits to VMI while renewing his decades old acquaintances with classmates and friends. An active member of the community, he was a member and past president of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club, Dominion Club and the Fredericksburg – Quantico VMI Alumni Chapter. He served on the Stafford County School Board during the 70’s and early 80’s, during a time of much growth in the school system. He also served on numerous committees and boards for the VMI Keydet Club and Alumni Association. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Kennedy Saunders, DDS. Other survivors include his sons, Samuel (Mary) of Charlottesville and David (Barbara) of Richmond and daughter Dr. Jennelle S. Williams, MD (Scott) of Chapel Hill, NC, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He is also survived by his brother Paul (Tatum) of Piney River, and his sister Rebecca Tucker of Midlothian. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1 at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 3 at Harewood Cemetery, 692 Harewood Lane, Roseland.
