Prayer Vigil Service is planned for 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 9 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Valley City with public viewing beginning at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 10, with interment at St. Catherine's Parish Cemetery. Sharon Anne Clancy was born August 2, 1936, the 7th child of John E. Clancy and Frances M. (Starke) Clancy. She attended St. Catherine's elementary school and graduated from Valley City High School. A firm believer in the importance of life-long learning Sharon first obtained a one year teaching certificate from Valley City State University to teach in a rural school, which she did at Pierce #99, Wimbledon, ND. She returned to VCSU to earn her Standard Teaching Certificate and then taught 6th grade at Lakota, ND. She returned to VCSU and earned a BS degree in English and Science. She taught at Waubun, MN and Kenosha, WI. Sharon earned an MS degree in horticulture from North Dakota State University and taught specialty crops production and marketing at Detroit Lakes, MN. Sharon founded and operated Clancy's Prairie Greenery at Rural Valley City producing and marketing fruits and vegetables. She taught in the Plant and Soil Science Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Sharon returned to NDSU and earned a doctoral degree in Range Science and became a Ceritfied Ecologist. She engaged in numerous other continuing education endeavors and professional organizations. Sharon had a deep love for God's creation, especially the soil. She believed hunger to be a function of poverty and that sustainable agriculture with wide distribution of the land is the key to fighting poverty. Sharon learned and shared by extended service projects including being a farmworker in Cornwall, England; a horticultural consultant in Russia; a Crop Extension Officer with the U.S. Peace Corps in the Eastern Caribbean; and a Soil Conservationist with USDA. Sharon lived the philosopy of thinking globally and working locally. She was very involved in fostering Local Foods production and distribution, the Farmers' Markets, Garden Club, and the ND Farmers Union. She was an active member of the Democratic/NPL party and worked deligently to engage others in civic responsibilty. Sharon had a deep love and appreciation of the arts, interst in music,reading, humor, painting and dancing, all the little things that add spice to a person'slife. She loved God,was committed to her faith and lived the concepts of Catholic Social Teaching with dedication to the "Common Good". She was involved in liturgical music and reading, she was the sexton for St. Catherine's Cemetery. Sharon was very attentive to and loving of her nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sisters Eileen Van Dyck, Medford,Oregon, Lorna Miller, Madison, Wisconsin, Lucile (Bill) Zink, Fargo, North Dakota, her brother Lynn (Janice) Clancy, Bismarck, North Dakota, and a sister-in-law Rita Clancy, Valley City, North Dakota. She is preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Frances and John Clancy, her sister Rita Howard, and her brothers Adrian Clancy and Neil Clancy. In lieu of flowers Sharon had requested donations be given in her memory to St. Catherine's Cemetery, the Bridges Arts Council, Valley City State University Foundation, and the North Dakota Farmers Union Foundation.
