He suffered a stroke during dinner on the previous Thursday and failed to resume consciousness during the five days he was hospitalized in Norfork Nebr. The deceased man was a "horse and buggy era" doctor in Clarkson shortly after the turn of the century. He also practiced in Scottsbluff prior to coming to Stanton 31 years ago. Stanton's present mayor and only remaining physician, Dr H S Tennant, first came to this community to replace Dr Allen for a vacation and was later associated with him in medical practice from 1927 to 1947. Born Apr 6, 1874, on a farm near Harlan Iowa, Silas Gilbert was the son of Dan and Mary Bothwell Allen. He attended Woodbine Normal college and for a time taught school before entering Omaha Medical college, now University of Nebraska College of Medicine. During 1901 and 1902 he was house physician at Methodist hospital in Omaha before beginning practice in Clarkson. Here he met and was married to Louise Barin of Ord, Nebraska on June 28, 1904. The doctor practiced in Clarkson until 1918 when he moved to Scottsbluff where he was city physician and remained until 1923 at which time he came to Stanton. A 77 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Dr Allen was a 32nd degree Mason, receiving his degree at his home lodge in Harlan. He was affiliated with the Business Men's Club, had been a member of the Scottsbluff Lions Club, was a local surgeon of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and a member of several associations of physicians and surgeons. In 1952 he was honored by the Nebraska State Medcial Association for having completed fity-two years, which made him one of the elder citizens of medicine in the Cornhusker state. Surviving in addition to Mrs Allen, are a daughter, Mrs Lowell F (Viola) Maxwell of Jamestown, NY; a son, Silas Gilbert Allen Jr of Kimballton, Nebr; five grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs Herbert Wilcox (Cora) of Norfolk; Mrs Daisy Young and Mrs Tom Newby of Harlan and Mrs Franklin Zoerb (Cleo) of Scottsbluff. His parents, a brother and sister, and one child who died in infancy, preceded him in death. Obit from Patty C (#46926670)
