Read More	Dr. Stephen Lewis, (Oct. 21, 1945) Medical Mission'y Dies in Grove City Member of Jefferson Country Family that Gave Over 100 years to Mission Work Dr. Stephen Lewis, Medical missionary and member of a family that has given more than 100 years of service to mission work in China, died Sunday in the home of his sister, Dr. Elizabeth Lewis, in Grove City, following an illness of but three weeks. Dr. Lewis was born in Perry Township two miles west of Frostburg, November 2, 1869, the son of John H. and Elizabeth (Should be Isabel) Diltz Lewis. He attended the public schools and when a young man taught for several years in the schools of the county. He later entered Grove City College and graduated there. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania medical school. He served in the Spanish-American War and in 1902 went to Kengchow, Hunan Province, in China, as a medical missionary. There he had charge of a men's hospital. The next 25 years of his life he spent in China. While home on a leave of absence he met and married Miss Mary Land, who was preparing for mission work in Dr. White's Bible School. She returned with him to Hengchow and there her health failed. They returned to America but remained in mission work. They went to Indian Wells, Arizona, where he worked with the Indians for a number of years. When this station closed Dr. Lewis returned to China to work with a medical friend in a private hospital. He was there three years, Mrs. Lewis remaining in her home in York, S. C. When Dr. Lewis retired from mission work he went with his wife to St. Petersburg, Fla., and there she died on August 1, 1941. Dr. Lewis remained in St. Petersburg, spending the summers with his sisters in Grove City and was preparing to return to Florida when taken ill three weeks ago. He was a member of the Perry Presbyterian Church. The Lewis family has given over 100 years to mission work in China. Dr. Charles Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis had hospitals in China while on missionary work there and Miss Carrie Lewis worked as a private nurse there independent of the mission board. He leaves the following brothers and sisters, Harry, of this city; John D. of Grove City; Mrs. Dilla Trezona, of Greenville; Nora and Dr. Elizabeth, both of Grove City. He was a brother of the late Linus M. Lewis and of Dr. Charles Lewis, a missionary to China. He leaves a number of nephews and nieces in the vicinity of Punxsutawney, which community he always regarded as his home town. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in Grove City in the home of Dr. Elizabeth Lewis. Burial will be in York, S. C., where Mrs. Lewis is buried.
