Olson Mother = Carol Amelia Crumb Spouse = Lisa Moon Olson --------- After a 10-month fight with cancer, Steven Olson, 63, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, July 6, 2012, at Hopewell House Hospice, Portland, Oregon, in the arms of his family and friends. Steven was born in Anacortes, Washington, the second of Carol and John W. Olson's four children. He attended school in Anacortes, Enumclaw and Seattle, Washington. At Ballard High School, Seattle, Steven had a 4.0 grade-point average and was sponsored by the Rotary Club for a senior year abroad in Sweden, where he learned Swedish and visited parts of Europe as a student. Steven later finished high school and was awarded a full scholarship to Columbia University. He completed his undergraduate work at University of California-Berkeley (Bachelor of Arts in English, 1974) and graduate studies at Stanford University (Ph.D. in English, 1981), with a doctoral dissertation on the poetry of Conrad Aiken. Steven then began a distinguished career as professor of English that included numerous scholarly publications and teaching posts at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and Peninsula College in Port Angeles. Steven was well-remembered during his career by students and colleagues alike both for his tremendous intellect as well as his colorful manner. He was recognized with many honors during his career, including for Outstanding Service, Washington Community College Humanities Association, and was selected three times for inclusion in Who's Who Among American Teachers for educational excellence and making a difference in the lives of his students. He also participated in Peninsula's faculty exchange program with partner universities in China, and taught English and English Literature in China for several semesters in various years. After Steven's retirement from Peninsula, he accepted a teaching post offered by Guilin University of Electronic Technology (GUET) in the beautiful city of Guilin, Guangxi Province, southern China. Steven and his wife, Lisa, lived in Guilin for nearly three years, but he finally decided to retire altogether from teaching, and the family was delighted to see Steven and Lisa return to the USA (July 2011). Sadly, Steven's retirement plans were cut short, and his battle with cancer began soon thereafter, culminating with Steven's peaceful passage on July 6. Steven is survived by his wife, Lisa Moon Olson (Portland), along with Lisa's daughter, Teresa Cassidy, and family (Sequim), including Teresa's husband, Kevin, and Lisa's grandchildren, Lacey, Lexus, Kaleb and Alabama. Steven is also survived by his loving son, Alexander Olson-Bick (attending The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington), who was at his dad's side during the final weeks. In addition, Steven is survived by siblings John Olson (Suzanne) of Orcas Island, Washington, Blythe Olson and David Olson of Portland, Kevin Olson (Rainy) of Federal Way, Washington, Rachel Olsson of Seattle and their families. An informal gathering of family and friends to celebrate Steven's life is planned later this year in Morton, Washington, where Steven's inurnment at the City Cemetery will be near his mother, Carol, along with grandparents and extended family across many generations who pioneered in the Morton area where the family home still stands.
