Description	:	Thomas Gray Harvey, Kennebunk, ME died Oct. 2, 2000 at the Atria Kennebunk. Dr. Harvey was born May 27, 1906 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Chandler Cushman and Lena May (Osgood) Harvey. He attended grammar school and first year high school in Fort Fairfield and in 1920 went to the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., graduating from there in 1924 and leaving the school the very day that the long-time headmaster, Hubert Gray Beuhler died. Dr. Harvey was born May 27, 1906 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Chandler Cushman and Lena May (Osgood) Harvey. He attended grammar school and first year high school in Fort Fairfield and in 1920 went to the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., graduating from there in 1924 and leaving the school the very day that the long-time headmaster, Hubert Gray Beuhler died. In 1930, he received his BS from the University of Maine where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In the fall of that year, he went to New York City where he studied medicine for four years at Cornell University Medical College getting his MD degree in 1933. Just before the beginning of his third year in New York, Dr. Harvey married Olga Evelyn Aldrin of Worcester, MA. Miss Aldrin was cousin of retired army officer Edwin Aldrin, of Upper Montclair, NJ, the father of "Buzz" Aldrin the second man on the moon. From June through January 1933, the Harvey's lived in a tent at Barnum Pond in the Adirondacks while he was employed as a contract physician for two Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the local area. From January 1934 through June 1935 he interned at the Hartford Hospital where his first child, Elizabeth, was born. In July of 1935 he began practicing country medicine in the wilds of Aroostook County, where he ranged over a wide area. In the meantime, son William and daughter Kristen were born having the same birthday, just two years apart. In the early 1940's while living in Fort Fairfield, he was instrumental in securing funds for, and the building of, the Community General Hospital. He was on the School Board for two terms, and served as president of the county medical society and of the Aroostook Antituberculosis Association. For several years he belonged to the N E Obstetrical and Gynecological Society serving for some time on the board of directors. In the late 1940's he moved his practice to Caribou and became member of the staff of the old Cary Hospital for several years. During this time, he learned to fly and secured a private pilot's license. In 1963, Dr. Harvey and his wife, Olga toured Europe in a ruby-red Volkswagen for three months traveling 14,175 miles and visiting all but two western European countries, while son, William, who had just received his MD took over his office in Caribou. In 1969 the Harveys moved to Ajo, Arizona, where the doctor joined the staff of Phelps Dodge's New Cornelia Hospital. Here he was reminded first hand that a Mexican baby born north of the border was automatically a US citizen. When copper fell on bad times and the Phelps Dodge Mine shut down in 1976, another move was made to Sierra Vista, Arizona, where the doctor found work in the Raymond Bliss Army Hospital at Fort Huachuca for two years as a contract physician in the outpatient clinic. Upon the death of his wife, Olga from cancer in 1978, Dr. Harvey retired from active practice and moved to Tuscon. In 1979 he married Florence Braithwaite Wolfe. They lived in her Tuscon hope until they moved to a new home at One Oakwood Lane in Kennebunk on June 20, 1983. Florence died in 1985. In June 1986 Dr. Harvey married Marjorie Files, widow of Judston Grant Files of South Windsor, Connecticut, and fraternity brother at University of Maine at Orono. They had met many years before, when nurse Files was on duty at the Hartford Hospital, where the doctor completed his medical training. Among the doctor's many hobbies were traveling, listening to classical music, reading, bird watching, woodworking, and gardening. The deceased is survived by three children, Elizabeth Ruff, of Freeport, Dr. William C. Harvey, of Dallas, TX and Mrs. David Brownell, of Boiling Springs, PA. Also, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. November 11, 2000 at One Oakwood Lane, Kennebunk, his former residence.
