Born December 22, 1918, St. Croix Virgin Islands. Died August 4, 2008, Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC. A graduate of the University of NC, University of PA Medical School. Received his surgical training at the Roosevelt Hospital NYC, Captain US. Army Medical Corps. He practiced general surgery in Henderson, NC. Held a fellowship with Dr. Michael DeBakey, Houston, Texas and returned to Roosevelt where he spent the rest of his medical career. His happiest years in practice were at the Roosevelt where later he was a Trustee and as an Honorary Trustee of the St. Luke's- Roosevelt Hospital Board. He was an accomplished, caring surgeon and teacher. After retiring to Vero Beach, Florida, golf played a large part of his life, and he was an excellent golfer. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. There will be a family graveside service at a later date. (Obit published in the Vero Beach, FL "TC Palm" & "The New York Times" on Aug. 17, 2008.) Notes: On 2 Feb. 1920, Lt. Thomas S. Royster, Sr. was stationed at the U.S. Naval Station, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was b. Townsville, Vance Co., NC & was married. He is listed as an "Officer" but it is assumed he was a physician as he worked at the U.S. Naval Hospital. Wife Helen & son Thomas S. Royster, Jr. are with him on the census report. 1930 U.S. Census for Henderson, Vance Co., NC: Thomas S Royster Head M 39 North Carolina Helen Royster Wife F 39 Pennsylvania Thomas Royster Jr. Son M 11 Virgin Islands Helen Royster Dau F 7 South Carolina Thomas Royster, Sr. is a surgeon at a local hospital. Dr. Thomas Sampson Royster, Sr.'s parents were Dr. Thomas Satterwhite Royster & Sally Bullock Alston. Both sets of Thomas S. Roysters & wives are buried at Nutbush Presbyterian Church Cem., Townsville, Vance Co., NC.
