Varnum mar. 7 Nov. 1805 Sarah Davis in Washington Co., OH, both of Adams Twp. at the time [certified copy, Wash. Co. Marr., 1:48; Graham and Cottle, Wash, Co. Marr,, p. 77]. She was b. in Maine 20 April 1785 to Elder Nehemiah and Elizabeth (Marston) Davis, and her father performed her wedding ceremony. (See Davis Section, #13, Nehemiah Davis, for deeds proving this relationship.) Varnum was a farmer and millwright. He is found in no Washington Co. U.S. Census, but is found in 1820 in Dover Twp., Athens Co., OH, having then two sons and one daughter l0~16, and two sons and three daughters under 10. It seems likely that Varnum and Sarah moved to Athens Co. along with her father's family ca 1808. Varnum is first found in Athens Co. in April 1814 when he witnessed a deed, Bailey to Tuttle [Ath. Co. Deeds, 2:323]. Apparently some of Varnum's land transactions are unknown. However, a few deeds were recorded in Athens County. On 31 March 1818 Varnum G. Wells and his wife Sally signed and acknowledged a deed to George Nye, two five-acre parcels for $200, being the northern five acres of both Lots 342 and 343 along the north bank of the Hocking River [Athens Co. Deeds, 3:306, 2:473]. Some time later Varnum Wells bought from Daniel Herrold 45 acres from the north parts of both Lots 348 and 349, ninety acres in all, in Sects. 19 and 20, Twp, 10 Range 14, of Dover Twp. However, Varnum d. in Oct. 1828 and Daniel Herrold d. in April 1829 before the deed was recorded. In Oct. 1830 John White, Jr., "Adm. of the Estate of Daniel Herrold deceased," went before the Court of Common Pleas to show payment had been made for the land, and asked the Court to order a deed made to the heirs of Varnum G. Wells [Athens County Clerk of Court Minutes, Vol. I~4 18 15-1841, p. 252]. This was done, and the deed recorded 2 Dec. 1830, naming the ten heirs ["John White Jr Adm. of Daniel Herrold to heirs of Varnum G. Wells," 4th. Co. Deeds, 6:332]. The Wells heirs began to sell their shares as each attained legal age [4th. Co. Deeds, 6:401; 8:392; 8:587; 15:137-139]. Deed 6:401, dated 3 June 1831, "Heirs of Varnum G. Wells to Benjamin D. Wells," names Sylvia and her husband Edm. Wolf, Orrin M. Wells, and Sally and her husband Francis James, all selling their shares to Benjamin D. Wells. Deed 8:392, dated 27 Jan. 1837, names Marcia F. Wells "of Tippecanoe County Indiana" selling "my share as heir" to David Allen. Deed 8:587, dated 6 Oct. 1837, shows David Allen selling the land to Ewing and Vinton, the "six undivided tenth parts" he had bought from Sylvia, Orrin, Sally, Marcia F., Benjamin D., and Susannah, the latter two "by deed of 28 Oct 1833." In Deed 15:137-138, dated 28 July 1847, the four undivided tenth parts belonging to the four youngest heirs had been appraised at $285 to each heir and paid to them as each arrived at legal age. Athens Co. Sheriff Wm. Golden made this deed to Ewing & Vinton, The four youngest heirs are named as Rufus, Joseph, Harlow, and Anna Wells. In July 1832 Elizabeth Harper Herrold, widow of Daniel Herrold, went before the Court of Common Pleas seeking petition for dower on the land involved. The court proceeding, survey, and reports that followed named all the Wells heirs in full [Athens Co. Clerk of Court Records, 3:157-160]. Sarah (Davis) Wells d. 5 Sept. 1825 aged 40y 9m [g.s.J. Varnum G. Wells d. 16 Oct. 1828 at Chauncey, Athens Co., OH, and both are bur, at Nye Cemetery there. Peters stated the grave stone read, "Dr. Varnum G. Wells (Son of Thomas Wells)," with the inscription scaled off. Peters photographed both of these stones in 1939 for his records [Peters, 4th. Cu, Cern, Rec., 15:47, 62,) He also recorded a small marble block with both their names, erected between the two old sandstone markers. By 1985, only this marble block remained.
