He was born November 5, 1904, in Grayson County, Virginia to Jefferson Davis Cox and Lucy McKnight Cox. Dr. Cox entered Emory & Henry College in 1925 where he paid his expenses by various odd jobs. Following a very successful college career at Emory he taught at Baywood Schools. In 1930 he entered the Medical College of Virginia and in 1934 received his medical degree with honors. He then did his intern work at Wilmington General Hospital before beginning his practice in Galax in 1936. In Galax, Dr. Cox started what was first known as the Blue Ridge Hospital and later as the Galax General Hospital, during which time he served the community in many valuable areas. During his 50 years plus of medical practice, he became widely known and loved by everyone he met. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1962 and re-elected in 1964, where he served the Commonwealth of Virginia in a dedicated manner. Largely through his legislative work, Grayson Highlands State Park became a reality, one of the most beautiful parks in Virginia. Dr. Cox has been honored over the years by many organizations for his contributions through his profession and through community service. He had been a loyal member of the Masonic Order for over 50 years and strong supporter of the Galax United Methodist Church. In all probability there is no other person in this area who was more widely known and loved as was Dr. V.J. Cox. He, in turn, never met a person he did not like. Dr. Cox could always find some good in all people. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gladys G. Cox; six nieces, Edna A. Pinsky, Norfolk; Katheryn Wallace, Virginia Beach; Juanita Brown, Galax; Ella Mae Lindamood, Columbus, Ohio; Mildred Barr, Charlotte, N.C.; Alene Alderman, Emory, Va.; five nephews, Herbert Alexander, Mt. Jackson, Va.; Joe Alexander, Glendale, Ariz.; James Alexander, Virginia Beach; Chapman D. Cox, Galax; and Ben Cox of Emory, Va. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with burial in the Felts Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 4:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends Sunday evening. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. On November 28, 1936, the house at 406 West Stuart Drive was sold at auction to Dr. Virgil Jefferson Cox for the amount of $8005.00
