Five persons, all members of the same Parkersburg, Ia., family, were killed outright when the car in vhich they were riding was struck broadside by a Northwestern freight train at a grade crossing on the north edge of Algona Tuesday. The victims were identified as Dr. William A. Howard, 74, his wife, their daughter, Mrs. Lillian Tofft, 44. Mrs. Toffts husband, Christ A, Tofft, 45, and the Toffts son, William Arthur, 20. Authorities said it was impossible to determine who was driving the car at the time of the accident. However, the vehicle was registered to Dr. Howard, 74 year-old retired physician. Identification of the victims was delayed because of their mangled condition and relatives were called in to assist in the identification. The Toffts also have a daughter, Mary Carol, 18, who was not a member of the party. Algona police said the accident occurred on a straight stretch of highway and that there were no obstructions at the grade crossing which was not protected by automatic signals. Mrs. Tofft's body was pinned in the wreckage while others were strewn along the right-of-way as the southbound freight carried the car down the tracks. Fred B. Watson, 60, of Eagle Grove, engineer on the freight, said the train was traveling about 25 miles an hour entering Algona. He said he saw the car turn the highway and estimated its speed at 45 miles an hour. Watson told authorities he sounded the train's whistle and applied the brakes when it became apparent the auto was not going to stop. The train carried the auto 479 feet down the tracks before it cculd be brought to a halt. Watson said rain had made the rails slippery. Authorities said they found remains of a picnic lunch in the car. Friends of the Tofft family at Parkersburg said they understood the victims had been visiting relatives at Cherokee. It was believed they were enroute home at the time of the crash.
