Elgin, 76, died yesterday at his home, 27 Glenolden avenue, Glenolden, following an illness of 10 days. Dr. Elgin was a pioneer in the development of smallpox vaccines and was credited with much of the progress in the reduction of deaths due to smallpox. He retired from active work in the field only two weeks ago. The first unit of the H. K. Mulford laboratories in Glenolden was organized by Dr. Elgin in 1896 and he acted as director of research, remaining in charge when the laboratories were taken of by Sharp and Dohme in 1929. Dr. Elgin was a member of numerous medical societies and was a member of the medical faculty of the University of Maryland, from which he was graduated. He was also active in local politics, being a Democratic borough committeeman at the time of his death. Services will be held Wednesday evening at the Glenolden Congregational Church, where Dr. Elgin was a deacon and further services will be held Thursday at the Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, Md. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Estelle White Elgin, and two daughters, Miss Franklyn Elgin and Mrs. Mary Elgin Senat. Obituary Shamokin News-Dispatch (PA) - April 19, 1938 Dr. William Franklin Elgin, 76, former associate of Walter Reed and internationally famous producer of smallpox vaccines, died at his home here yesterday, it was disclosed belatedly today. A native of Poolesville, Md., he retired March 1 as director of the smallpox vaccine laboratories of Sharp and Dohme. Dr. Elgin was credited in medical circles with much of the progress made in this country in preventing smallpox. Recently he had been experimenting with vaccines made from eggs. A former coworker with Reed at the Marine Hospital in Washington, he later was director of the National Vaccine Laboratories at Bethesda, Md. Many of his articles on vaccine production were translated into foreign languages. Dr. Elgin was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters. Funeral services will be held at Congregational Church here tomorrow.
