Description	:	William Franklin Twigg was the grandson of Asa Twigg and son of Francis Twigg. Dr. William F. Twigg was born on a farm on the Williams Road in Allegany County. He attended local schools until age 16 when he attended high school in Schellsburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his return to Allegany County, William taught school for three years. At the age of 22, he began studies under a local doctor and in 1880 he attended the University of Maryland, graduating with his medical degree in 1883. His initial practice, established in the Fall of 1883, was in... Read More	William Franklin Twigg was the grandson of Asa Twigg and son of Francis Twigg. Dr. William F. Twigg was born on a farm on the Williams Road in Allegany County. He attended local schools until age 16 when he attended high school in Schellsburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his return to Allegany County, William taught school for three years. At the age of 22, he began studies under a local doctor and in 1880 he attended the University of Maryland, graduating with his medical degree in 1883. His initial practice, established in the Fall of 1883, was in Keyser, West Virginia. After relocating to Elk Garden, West Virginia, for three years, William returned home and began the general practice of medicine in Cumberland on January 1, 1887. From his medical offices located at 22 South Centre Street, Dr. Twigg would go on to practice medicine in this area for a span exceeding 30 years. Twigg was a member of the Cumberland Academy of Medicine which was incorporated in 1913, and the Allegany County Medical Society which was organized on February 28, 1867. He was also an active Mason, belonging to Potomac Lodge No. 100, A.F. & A.M. in Cumberland, and for 14 years held the post of county physician, thereby having supervisory authority over the county's Sylvan Retreat Asylum. William also served 25 years as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad surgeon. He married Sarah M. Hetzel of Allegany County on March 23, 1887. One of their children, Nial (1893-1918), made the supreme sacrifice during World War I. [Albert L.
