Graham Has Passed Away Death Occurred Last Night At 11:45 At the Family Home He Was A Winfield Pioneer Arrived in Winfield in October 1869 and Has Been One of the City Builders - Ex-Mayor - Burial Tomorrow. Dr. William G. Graham, Winfield pioneer and city-builder, passed away last night at 11:45 at his home at 13220 East Fifth avenue, after months of illness from a complication of diseases arising from hardening of the arteries and heart trouble. The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family home by Rev. Rufus L. George, pastor of Grace Methodist church, and interment will be made in Union cemetery. It is expected that President Mossman will be able to assist Rev. George in the services. He has left town but an attempt is being made to secure his return for the funeral. Mrs. Frank Siverd has charge of the music and announces that a quartet composed of Miss Nina Harrod, Mrs. Frank Siverd, Ernest Morris and Ray Gafney will sing three selections. The body of Dr. Graham may be viewed tomorrow morning between the hours of nine and eleven by his friends. The casket will not be opened at the funeral in the afternoon. Dr. Graham was one of the earliest settlers in this locality. When he arrived here on the last day of October 1869, he found buy three other white men had arrived before him, as settlers. These were E.C. Manning, C.M. Wood and W.W. Andrews. A few miles up the valley, nearer to other settlements, were one or two others. The doctor's wife was the first white woman to arrive upon the townsite of Winfield, and their son, Alvah J. was the first white child in the country as far as known. Dr. Graham was born in Holmes county, Ohio, April 18, 1841, in a family of six sons and four daughters. He lived on a farm until old enough to go to college. While yet a boy, he was a soldier in the 166th Ohio. He was married October 19, 1866, to Fannie Keys, who survives him. It was on account of her health that he first came west, settling at Leavenworth in 1868. As she became no better, he decided to try traveling in a wagon, seeking a locality where health could be found. Their team was a pair of Texas steers. Besides these and the wagon they had six weeks provisions and ten dollars in money. A movement of settlers had then begun toward the Osage reserve, a strip thirty miles wide extending from Cherokee and Crawford counties to the west of the state. As yet, it had not even been treated for with the Indians. There was no survey, and the locations of the streams and valleys was but vaguely known. However, there was a well defined road known as "The California Trail," leading up the Walnut from the Indian territory to join the Santa Fe Trail to the north. Down this trail seeking the southern part of the state the Grahams drifted. This country looking good to them they stopped here. The doctor located a claim on Timber Creek, about a mile north of where the town was later laid out. There he built a log cabin and began to break the sod. One of the steers died and they broke their cow to the yoke and made her help pull the plow. As hard as the life was, they stayed with it, and the original claim is still part of the doctor's estate. And Mrs. Graham's health improved. Being the first physician in the valley, the doctor soon had a practice extending over miles of country and reaching into adjoining counties. He made his trips on horseback, frequently being called to places forty miles away. In January after his arrival here the Winfield town company was organized, the doctor being a member. He was the first president of the Settlers Protective Association which had to do no only with protection of property from thieves but with defense against the Indians and against claim jumpers. In the early years, horse thieves became numerous and bold; they even had influence. The Protective Association put an end to their operations, assisted by certain sturdy elm trees at several places along the river. The doctor practiced his profession until very recently. He took active part in all of the enterprises of the town. He was one of the original trustees of Southwestern college. Twice he was mayor of Winfield and many times a member of the city council. He was also a member of the original charter board of the National Union, a fraternal insurance organization and remained continuously a member of its senate to the time of his death. His family consists of his wife and his two sons; Alvah J., who is a successful lawyer here and Ernest, a farmer. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters.
