He has been in very poor health the past winter from stomach and heart trouble. He was stricken while sitting in a chair by the window. He and Mrs. Carter arose Sunday morning and on account of Mrs. Carter being ill he assisted her in the work about the house. Later Mrs. Carter laid down and he was administering medicine to her, when he turned, walked into the other room, sat down and passed away before Mrs. Carter could reach his side. His death has been expected yet it was not felt that the end was so near. He and Mrs. Carter have both been very poorly this winter and on this account have spent most of the time with their daughter Mrs. Emovy H. English at Valley Junction. They came home several weeks ago, but he has been confined to the house most of the time since. Dr. Carter has been a practicing physician in Altoona for nearly 26 years and until recent years, when old age, and failing health compelled him to give up much of his work, he possessed a large practice. He was born May 18, 1839, in Russel county, Kentucky, where he grew to manhood. He taught several terms of school before moving to Marion county, Ia., in 1884, the family purchased a farm near Percy. He was married December 12, 1867 to Mary L. Elledge of Milton, Pike county, ILL. After a course, of study in medicine he began practice in Marion county, He was graduated in 1880 from the, American Medical college at St. Louis, Mo. He moved to Altoona in 1889, and continued in the practice of his profession almost to the time of his death. He was president of the Iowa Medical Society in 1890, and was an active member of the Masonic and Yeoman orders aud the Christian church here. He is survived by a wife and six children. The children are: Edwin E. Carter, with the, Equitable Life Insurance company, Des Moines; A. Kay Carter, with the Cedar Rapids Daily Gazette; C. O. Carter, editor of the, Maryland Tribune at Salisbury, Md.; Mrs. A.G. English of Valley Junction and Mrs. Amos Leuty of Morris, Minn. The funeral service were conducted from the Christian church Tuesday afternoon by the pastor Rev. Dillinger after which the body was laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery under the ritualistic service of the Masonic order.
