Description	:	After a lifetime of faithful service, Dr. William Horace Benjamin, 91, husband of Martha Aiken Benjamin, went home to rest in God's presence on August 9, 2008. Dr. Benjamin, known as "Pop" to his family, was born August 20, 1917, on a farm called the Gary Place in Greenwood County to the late Samuel Horace Benjamin and Ida M. Irwin Benjamin. He went on to... Read More	After a lifetime of faithful service, Dr. William Horace Benjamin, 91, husband of Martha Aiken Benjamin, went home to rest in God's presence on August 9, 2008. Dr. Benjamin, known as "Pop" to his family, was born August 20, 1917, on a farm called the Gary Place in Greenwood County to the late Samuel Horace Benjamin and Ida M. Irwin Benjamin. He attended Greenwood County schools and later graduated from North Greenville Baptist Academy. A quote from the 1941 yearbook describes him as "never too busy to play a prank or do a favor." He went on to graduate from Furman University, where he served as president of the student body and later attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned his Bachelor of Theology degree. While a student at Southern Seminary, he married Mildred Loftis. In 1978 he received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Furman University. In over fifty years of ministry, Dr. Benjamin served as pastor of Baptist churches in Wagener, Lamar, Abbeville, Anderson and Ware Shoals. From 1978-1995, he served as Outreach Minister at Berea First Baptist Church in Greenville. He lived a life of community service by serving as a Mason, chaplain to several fire departments, and member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, and countless other community organizations where he ministered to many people. A good day for "Pop" would be spending some time in prayer and Bible study, working in his rose garden, and catching a Furman football game. Mildred passed away in 2000, and Dr. Benjamin was blessed to meet and marry Martha Aiken in 2002. Since that time, they have lived happily at Martha Franks Retirement Center in Laurens. He is survived by his wife, Martha; his daughter and her husband, Susan and Mike Bishop; his son and his wife, John and Susie Benjamin; two stepchildren, Barton Aiken and his wife Elizabeth and Charlene and Hal Angel. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Timothy Bishop and his wife Candice; Benjamin Bishop and his wife Jan; Christopher Bishop and his wife Deborah; Mark Benjamin; Matthew Benjamin; and Michael Benjamin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Carroll Irwin Benjamin and Samuel Louis Benjamin. Dr. Benjamin has left behind a legacy of faith for his family, friends, parishioners, and all who knew and met him. Memorials may be made to Martha Franks Retirement Center or the charity of one's choice.
