His father, John Liggat Tunstall (1845-1877), fought for the Confederacy as a VMI cadet in the Battle of New Market and died when William Massie was only seven years of age. He and his sister, Corinne (1872-1959), were raised at Pharsalia, near Massie's Mill, by their maternal grandmother, Maria Effinger Massie, widow of William Massie (1795-1862). It was she who encouraged her grandson to pursue the study of medicine. His mother, the former Florence Leslie Massie (1847-1912) of Nelson County was the daughter of William Massie, son of Major Thomas Massie of the Revolutionary Army. His paternal grandfather was Whitmell Pugh Tunstall (1810-1854) who represented Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in both houses of the Legislature. As a Delegate, he fought for a decade to charter the Richmond and Danville Railroad (part of the present-day Norfolk Southern Railway). He served as the company's first president from 1847 until his death. After attending the first two years of Medical School at the University of Virginia, Dr. Tunstall completed his studies in 1892 at the Medical School of the College of the City of New York, which later became a part of NYU. Following his internship at the New York Poly clinic, he returned to Nelson County where he practiced medicine for nearly fifty years until his death. As a family physician he made house calls on horseback until the coming of the horseless carriage. No doubt primitive roads and a scarcity of bridges inspired his interest in a better highway system. He was also a proponent of better public education. Not only did he donate the right of-way through his farm for the construction of U.S. Route 29, he also gave to Nelson County five acres of land for the construction of Lovingston High School ca. 1932. Although it was called a high school, it also included grades one through seven. In 1888 William Massie Tunstall and Pearl Peebles, daughter of Julian Raines and Emma Peebles of Lovingston were married. They had two children, Florence Marie (1889-1972) and John Liggat (1892-1966). Marie married B. Harrison Lingo and they had a daughter, Jane Tunstall, 1924, who is the current owner of the Peebles property at Lovingston. John Liggat retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel, having served in both World Wars. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery as are his son Jack Liggat (1925-1990); grandson, John; sister, Marie; and brother-in-law, Commander B.H. Lingo. The marriage of Dr. Tunstall and Pearl Peebles ended in divorce. In 1916 Dr. Tunstall married Annie Maria Gleason, daughter of Rev. Robert Emmett Gleason and his wife, the former Georgia Thacker. They had three children: William M. Tunstall, Jr., DDS (1917-1962), Thomas Hope Tunstall (1920-1997) and Palmer Gleason Tunstall, b. 1926. All three sons were Army Veterans of WWII; William Massie, Jr., and Thomas Hope also served in the Korean Conflict. Dr. W.M. Tunstall, Jr., practiced dentistry, married Marion Redd (1919-1998) in 1946 and they had two children: W.M. Tunstall, III, b. 1958 and Sarah Perkins, b. 1960. Thomas Hope Tunstall married Florence Watts in 1945. He became a pharmacist and they had three children: Nancy Watts, b. 1946; Barbara Massie, b. 1950; and Pamela Hope, b. 1956. Palmer Gleason Tunstall, an FBI Agent, married Cecil Grey Parr in 1953. Their son, John Palmer, was born in 1956 and twin daughters, Jane Ann and Betty Grey were born in 1958. William Massie Tunstall, III, is Dr. Tunstall's only descendant presently residing in Nelson County, together with his wife, Janet, and their daughter, Neely. Prepared and submitted by: Palmer G.
