Read More	Thanks to contributor #47343179; Deaths - HOWSLEY - At the residence of his son-in-law, Jas. H. Berryman, in Central City, March 7th, 1880, of diabetes, Dr. William M. Howsley, in the 82d year of his age. The subject of this sketch was born in November 1798, in Nelson Co., Kentucky, in which state he resided for nearly sixty-two years. In early life he commenced the practice of medicine, and followed that professin for some thirty years. During about ten years of that time he was a minister of the gospel, of the Free-will Baptist denomination. He was also an earnest and eloquent temperance lecturer, and was for several years Grand Worthy Patriarch of the Sons of Temperance in that state. For a number of years he conducted a nursery at Bowling Green, Ky. In 1860 he emigrated to Kansas, arriving at Leavenworth April 10th, and locating near that city. His time since then has been almost exclusively devoted to experimenting in and raising fruit, having at his death a fruit farm in Kansas upon which were some three hundred varieties of apples alone, besides an extensive assortment of other fruits. He was instrumental in organizing the Kansas Horticultural Society, and was for eight years president thereof, peremptorily declining a re-election owing to advance age. The esteem in which he was held by the officers and members of that society is attested by several kind and sympathetic letters which he received a few days prior to his death. His ruling passion for horticulture was exemplified by his connection with THE ITEM as editor of that department. Notwithstanding his more than four score years, the articles he has contributed have been marked with a force of thought worthy of a younger writer, and in his death, our readers lose one who could have done much for the horticultural interests of this county. The deceased was twice married -- his first wife dying within about a year, without issue. By his second wife, with whom he had lived within a few months of half a century, and who survives him, he has had nine children, six of whom are still living, one being the wife of Mr. Berryman. It is a little peculiar that of these six -- three sons and three daughters-- no two now reside in the same state. It is a consolation to the survivors to be able to rely on the consciousness that he who for so long a time devoted his attention to the fruis of earth, is now partaking of the more glorious fruit of the Tree of Life.
