Description	:	Elder Zachariah J. Compton MD. Son of Elizabeth and Howard Compton he was born near the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Rappahannock Co., Va., Jan. 19, 1801. Not withstanding his lack of opportunity for education by reason of distance from school and necessity of working on the farm, from early youth until 21 years of age, he spend every moment he could spare and at maturity he was well qualified to engage in teaching school which he did until he was ready for the practice of medicine. Not withstanding his lack of opportunity for education by reason of distance from school and necessity of working on the farm, from early youth until 21 years of age, he spend every moment he could spare and at maturity he was well qualified to engage in teaching school which he did until he was ready for the practice of medicine. His entire time as a student at school was about 14 months and I dare say what he accomplished in that short time at school as a student and while teaching would put to shame many of our present day college graduates. He was modest and unostentatious tho thoroughly posted in what he taught and practical. He was a man of sweet disposition and loved by all who knew him. If he had an enemy at all it was one who couldn't bear to hear sound doctrine, the doctrine of Old School Baptists. He delighted in and proclaimed it from the pulpit from early youth until near the age of 86. He was not eloquent as a preacher but well informed and spoke with great ease, was truly one that need not be ashamed. He administered to the people, both as a physician and minister whether they paid him or not. Very little money was ever given him for his long and faithful service in the ministry, but he never wavered or faltered in his duty. It was not for money that he preached, but purely for the cause of Christ. At the age of 26 Dr. Compton was married to Eliza McKay of Page Co., Va. From this union 15 children were born. His wife died 2 years prior to this death. He lived to be 86 years old and died at Bentonville, Warren Co., Va. at the home of his son, Dr. J. B. Compton. He fought a good fight and finished his course with joy.
