Sanden, 74, of Mentor, MN, and longtime North Dakota broadcaster and KNOX radio announcer passed away Sunday, June 16, 2019, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Duaine Leslie Sanden was born on March 22, 1945, in Grand Forks, ND the son of Gilmer and Bertha (Mattson) Sanden. Starting in his early teens, Duaine enjoyed a radio career spanning six decades starting in 1959 at KILO Radio. He once noted, “They got so tired of throwing their paperboy (me) out, they finally gave me a job in radio.” In the mid-’60s, he started doing play-by-play for high school sports covering teams up and down the Red River Valley on both sides of the river. Duaine was known for his own way of calling sports – “Wide to the East”, for a missed field goal and “Goal Time”, for a touchdown. He was an early voice for University of North Dakota sports, being inducted into the North Dakota AP Sportscaster Hall of Fame in 2018. He is also the 2019 recipient of the Pioneers in Broadcasting Award from the North Dakota Broadcaster Association. Duaine was well known for his Christmas season broadcast of school holiday music programs. He recorded and replayed the concerts on Christmas Day. Last Christmas marked the 55th straight year for “A Very Sanden Christmas” which was aired on KNOX. Duaine was the owner and operator of the Maple Lake Pavilion taking pride in the history of the historic facility and enjoying the many people he met there. Duaine was a very active promoter of area county fairs having served as a member on the Grand Forks Fair board of directors. He was inducted into the North Dakota Association of Fairs Hall of Fame in 2016. Duaine served in the United States Air Force Reserve from November of 1965 until November of 1998 when he retired as a Chief Master Sargent of the Air Force. He is survived by his sisters, Dianne (John) Jones, and Geraldine Marken both of Austin, TX; 2 nieces and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew. He was 74. Sanden started his radio career in 1959 at KILO Radio. He later called high school sporting events and UND sporting events and in 2018 he was inducted into the North Dakota Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame. He also was heavily involved in the Grand Forks racing scene for years. For years he did a weekly racing program and later was inducted into the River Cities Speedway Hall of Fame. His radio career, however, was diverse. For 55 straight years, Sanden recorded then broadcast area high school holiday music programs on Christmas Day. He was a fixture on weekend radio in Grand Forks. His weekends, for years, usually started with a Saturday morning coaches show. His passion for county fairs was immense, said Mark Landa, who is on the Greater Grand Forks Fair board. “He loved everything about the fair and putting on the event for the people,” said Landa. “He basically restarted the fair in Grand Forks in the mid-1980s.” Sanden also served as a member of the Greater Grand Forks Fair board of directors. And his promotion of county fairs throughout the region also resulted in his induction into the North Dakota Association of Fairs Hall of Fame in 2016. Sanden started his radio career when he was 13 years old. “He went the extra mile,” said former radio colleague Mike Hergert. “Whether it was high school sports, the music over the holidays or the county fair, those seemed to be his passions. His car was always filled with equipment. “He was a tireless workhorse.” Another former radio colleague, David Schroeder, said Sanden was a familiar radio voice in Grand Forks and the region for decades. “It was pretty much a seven-day-a-week thing for Duaine, always,” said Schroeder. “He stayed in the radio business his entire life. It was his life. “He knew everybody.” In his later years, Sanden also became the owner of the Maple Lake Pavilion near Mentor, Minn.
